This is a good, solid episode that certainly does something a bit different.
Doyle becomes emotionally involved with pretty Ann Holly, after she unwittingly witnesses a CI5 shootout (and a man shot dead) in the corridor just outside the front door of her apartment.
At the same time, CI5 are on the trail of a smuggling ring who are somehow getting drugs into the country via plane. Could there really be a link between Ann and the smugglers... it seems unlikely.
This is the episode where Doyle gets a bit of romance in his life - but Cowley doesn't seem to share his sentiments, or feel that this particular match is made in heaven. As the story progresses, it ultimately pits Bodie and Doyle against each other - leading to some inevitably tense and emotional scenes.
There's still plenty of humour too, as Bodie seems to enjoy ribbing his partner about his new romance - and we also get some fun scenes of Doyle and Ann letting their hair down at the local disco, and getting a bit loved-up.
This is a strong and memorable episode, and a heart-rending one too, where we really do feel for Doyle. You're left wondering what choice he will ultimately make when he has to decide between being married to woman he says he loves... or being married to the job he loves instead.
