- Long-time, small-town marshal Royal Shaw (Gene Evans) wants his "Moment in the Sun" by delivering famous local, popular "Wanted Dead or Alive" outlaw Reed McCuller (Pat Conway) to the Denver authorities by himself. McCuller is beloved by most of the townspeople for having helped them with needed gifts such as water pumps and seed and by protecting them from other outlaws. Shaw knows that the townspeople will ride after him and McCuller to rescue the outlaw by force, so the sheriff decides to hide the two of them in Favor's cattle drive. However, the townspeople, led by McCuller's brother, Lindsay, surround Favor, his outfit, the Sheriff and McCuller. Lindsay, meanwhile, we learn is secretly jealous of his brother's fame and yearns for his girlfriend, Mar. Favor sends Rowdy to bring back law officers; Rowdy is helped by Mar, who rightly fears Lindsay will kill Reed. Lindsay and the townsfolk attack the trail drive, which stampedes. Lindsay fires upon the sheriff and his brother, killing the former, just before Rowdy arrives with the sheriff and other law officers.—Robert Sieger
- Marshal Royal K. Shaw has allowed outlaw Reed McCuller to run free for years but decides to arrest him and take him to the authorities in Denver. Shaw is after the notoriety gained by other marshals such as Earp and Masterson. Shaw's plan is to accompany Favor's drive as a guide through a valley as he has done the previous years using the drive as cover from the locals. Reed's girlfriend sees Shaw take Reed and reports it to Reed's brother Lindsay and other locals. They suspect Shaw is with Favor so they surround the herd and confront Favor. Favor doesn't hide the men but Shaw keeps Reed and himself hidden. Favor sends Rowdy for another sheriff and posse to help Shaw. Rowdy is captured but escapes with the help of Reed's girlfriend, Mar, after she discovers Lindsay really wants Reed dead to usurp his place. Favor and his men decide to toss down their guns rather than fight the locals as they realize Shaw tricked and manipulated them although they have no use for Reed. Realizing he is trapped, Shaw stampedes the herd to try to force his way through but ends up losing his life when Lindsay shoots him. Sheriff Blair arrives to take Reed in custody and sends his posse after Lindsay.—Anonymous
