Pat Hingle whom Clint Eastwood used in a few of his feature films is part of the cast of this Rawhide episode. Hingle and Leonard Strong play a couple of bottom feeding 'managers' who arrange gunfights the way prizefights are matched. They set odds and clean up in the betting while someone out there might die.
Rowdy Yates is in town with Wishbone and another drover played by Valentin DeVargas and they win a fast draw contest. But that's to lure one of them into a fight with notorious gunfighter J.D. Cannon. Cannon is as weary as Gregory Peck was in The Gunfighter of the whole business.
A whole film was made about this kind of 'sport' called simply A Gunfight with Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash. It's also very well done and highly recommended by me. But this Rawhide story should also be seen with Hingle and Cannon standing out.
By the way the usually comic Wishbone shows himself in this to be wiser than Clint Eastwood. Watch and see what I mean.
