- An Army deserter has left stolen Army property at Favor's camp (leading to Favor's arrest by an Army detail), and the deserter is intent on stealing money from a father and daughter who have recently left the drovers' camp alone.
- Ne'er-do-well slacker Pvt. Hap Johnson (Robert Blake) deserts the cavalry. He's a "winter soldier," one who joins the Army in winter to enjoy the warm barracks, and then deserts when the weather improves. He makes his way to Favor's cattle drive and soon takes off upon hearing that a father and daughter, who have money from the sale of their farm, are traveling alone by wagon, having just left the drovers' camp. Soon thereafter, an Army detail arrives looking for the deserter, and they discover the Army blanket and Army horse Johnson left behind in exchange for inconspicuous ones. Favor is arrested and held for buying stolen Army items. And the drovers learn that the father and daughter duo are heading towards renegade Indians. So Rowdy has a double reason for pursing the duo: (1) to capture Johnson and prove Favor's innocence; and (2) to save the duo from the Indian danger.—chipe
- It is spring time so Hap Johnson decides to desert the Army. He is a Winter Soldier who enlists for a home during the winter. The Kurtz family has traveled with the drive but Pete tells them about a shortcut following the telegraph wire so they leave the herd. Hap picks up cheap civilian clothes and gun at an Indian trading post where he had seen Wishbone earlier. He finds the drovers and introduces himself to Wishbone as an old friend from back home. Wishbone is skeptical of him and Favor recognizes the signs of a winter soldier turning Hap away when he asks for a job. Hap silently trades a blanket and his Army horse with a blanket and horse from the drover camp. The Army is notifying settlers of a pending Comanche attack but has to find the deserter Hap. They arrest the trading post owner followed by Favor and Hey Soos since they have the Army blanket and horse. Rowdy and Quince track Hap finding he has gone after the Kurtz family. When they spot Comanche sign, Quince goes for the Army while Rowdy continues to the Kurtz wagon. He finds Hap was there but Hap is forced to return when he spots Comanche scouts. Mr. Kurtz asks Rowdy to save a bullet for his daughter if there is no hope.—Anonymous
