- Lister wants to go on a date with the hologram of navigation officer Kristine Kochanski, much to Rimmer's disapproval. Lister decides to do a cooking exam so he can outrank Rimmer. But Rimmer has a cunning plan.
- Lister and Rimmer are taking stock of the ship's inventory, Lister is fed-up because it's Saturday night and he wants to enjoy himself, he leaves with a pack of cigarettes as payment. Lister is preparing for a night-out in the quarters and asks Holly why Rimmer was resurrected, according to Holly they know each other best based on the number of words shared, all of which were arguments.
Lister is drinking alone in the ship's disco and reminisces about life before the accident. Rimmer crosses Cat in the corridors, the latter has found the cigarette supply and wants to keep it, Rimmer offers him plenty of fish for returning them. Lister is jamming in the quarters and Rimmer shuts off the music, they climb into their bunks and Lister says he wants to date the late Kristine Kochanski, he asks only twenty-four hours with her for deactivating Rimmer, Rimmer doesn't expect Lister to switch him back on and refuses to hand over her hologram disc.
Lister warns Rimmer he'll pass an exam and become an officer, outranking Rimmer. Rimmer is unmoved. The next morning Lister is gone and Rimmer's right arm is replaced, he has Peterson's arm because his data disk is corrupted, making his physical form glitched. Cat is gorging himself on fish in the science room, Lister is not there. Rimmer finds him in the exam room taking a test, Lister wishes to be a chef, if only because it means outranking Rimmer.
Rimmer takes his own test on astronomy hoping to maintain his position, Cat is slumped on Lister's bunk with a full belly from all the fish. Lister comes in with a cake he made in catering classes, and offers some to Cat, Cat leaves the room about to be sick. Rimmer tries to be chummy with Lister, giving him the location of the cigarettes, it's clear Rimmer is trying to convince Lister not to take the exam, however Lister will go ahead with it.
During the cooking test Kochanski appears, she asks Lister why he didn't tell her how he felt about her, self-esteem was the reasons, then Kochanski's speech seems strange, talking more like Rimmer would. Lister sees he's being duped and throws Rimmer out. After the test, Lister consults a machine for the results, apparently he passed.
