THE RIFLEMAN – A Time for Singing - 1960

This is the 64th episode from the 1958 to 1963 western series, THE RIFLEMAN. Over the course of 168 episodes we follow the life of Lucas McCain and his son, Mark. They have moved to the small western town of North Fork where they hope to start a new life. Chuck Connors headlines the series with Johnny Crawford as his son. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle which of course ends up getting him in no end of trouble.

North Fork is getting ready to greet the just arrived new preacher and his wife. The man, Robert Knapp seems a right nice fellow, and his wife, Patricia Barry, is a real looker. The couple are escorted out to a small house set aside for the preacher. Everyone plans on seeing the preacher at work the next day at the Sunday meeting.

After everyone has cleared off, the couple are joined by Chris Alcaide and Robert Osterloh. It seems that the bunch, are really bank robbers. They had come across the real preacher and his wife on the trail some days before. They had murdered the pair and came to North Fork to rob the local bank. The cover of preacher and wife seemed a perfect disguise.

There is however trouble in the ranks of the gang. Miss Barry is really married to gang leader, Alcaide. But she has been stepping out behind his back with the fake reverend, Knapp.

Anyways, Chuck Connors' son, Johnny Crawford stumbles onto the gang while delivering a welcoming basket to the house. The gang puts the bag on Crawford and tie him up in the barn. Needless to say Connors comes a calling when Crawford fails to return.

The gang's plans all go for naught, as Connors finds his son who informs him of the robber's plans. This causes more than a few rounds to be exchanged between Connors and the not so nice crowd. The villains are soon dispatched and ready for Boot Hill.

This is an okay episode, but not really anything special.

Mark's Best Line Ever

This was a pretty entertaining episode, but the best part was Mark's comment at the end that "She had really nice hair."

The story really never developed.

In this episode, North Fork gets a new preacher by the name of Dan Hewitt along with his wife, Laurie. The town is looking forward o the new couple and they have messaged ahead saying they would be along within a few weeks. When the day for the couple to arrive, the entire town is happy to see the couple and believe they will be a valuable asset to the community.

However, what has happened is that the real preacher and wife had been killed by someone outlaws and now the villains are posing as the new preacher to rob the North Fork bank. The couple are a part of a group of five that has started the ball rolling in order to get to the bank.

The leader of the gang, Spence, thinks Mark may have stumbled on the fact that the preacher has something to hide. Spence has Mark tied up in the preacher's barn as the first sermon is being preached. When the congregation beings singing, that will be the key to let the others know it is time to rob the bank.

There really is little to this episode that makes it stand-out more than others shows. It is one of those shows where Mark is in trouble and Lucas knows something is amiss. Perhaps it was the quick thirty minute format but it just seemed the story did not progress enough before it came to an abrupt end. But as Mark said near the end of the episode, "she had real nice hair".

She had real nice hair

Warning: Spoilers
I love the end comment by Mark saying She had real nice hair. While going thru some of the belongings of the real preacher's wife Mark finds a 'switch' hair extension and basically gets caught playing with it when the fake preacher walks into the parsonage. Later Mark finds the woman brushing her 'very long hair' out and becomes attracted to the woman. At the end when she falls victim to her own real husbands jealousy, she is shot and killed by him. While the imposter preacher whom fell in love with her cradles her limp body, Mark exclaims, she had real nice hair!
