- Milly Scott buys Hattie's general store. Her background as a schoolteacher does little to prepare her for what she bought into when she hires a stranger in town to collect all the debts owed to the store.
- Old-time resident Hattie Denton, needed by her sister in Denver, feels obliged to suddenly and shockingly betray North Fork by selling the only general store to the first person with an offer, a naïve, beautiful woman totally ignorant of business, who immediately proceeds willfully if confusedly to agree with a shady, violent newcomer on a collection scheme for accounts receivable. The economy of the town is imperiled and numerous injuries to townspeople are soon noted by Lucas and Micah.—Jasha
- Attractive if a bit ill-tempered (at first) and completely unacquainted with the demands of running a general store in a frontier town, and anachronistically if fetchingly sporting a ponytail and form-fitting slacks, a new young storekeeper joins the cast as McCain's continuing, if unspoken, love interest.—Morganalee
- Lucas McCain is surprised to hear that while hew was away, Hattie Denton sold her store and has moved away to care for an ailing relative. The new owner is Millie Scott, an eager young woman who has little experience in running a business and even less it would seem in dealing with people. She's overwhelmed and is amazed at the amount of credit Hattie had given out to the townspeople. When Jack Adams offers to collect the debts on her behalf she quickly agrees without realizing just to what extent he will use strong arm tactics to collect. His first call is on Lucas McCain.—garykmcd
