- On their way to Reno, Nevada to do a bit of gambling, Tod and Buz meet two overly conspicuous men, one somewhat shifty looking and the other straight-laced looking, traveling together with a satchel full of money carried around by the straight-laced one. They are Sam Keep and Francis Oliver respectively, who are also on their way to Reno from their small home town of Broken Knee, Nevada, ninety miles away. They have approximately $2,700 of the residents' money, which they want Sam, the owner of the local pool hall and the known gambler who once won $60,000 in a game of craps, to gamble with in the hopes of converting it to $35,000, no more, no less. The town has gone broke since the recent closure of the mine, and they need that $35,000 to make the necessary infrastructure improvements to reinvent the town into a tourist mecca. As such, the town is resting all its hopes and dreams on Sam, despite no one truly trusting him. This plan is against Francis' wishes, he who believes it is pure folly. Francis, who knows nothing about gambling but knows money as the mine's conservative finance man, has come along solely to ensure that Sam does not abscond with the $2,700. Based on an incident upon their first meeting, Francis hires Tod and Buz as an extra shadow for Sam. As Tod and Buz spend more time with the pair and get ensconced within the hopes of the residents of Broken Knee, they learn more about Sam's past which may affect his success or failure. But the biggest question mark in that success or failure may be Francis, who has never experienced the highs and lows and excitement that comes along with gambling.—Huggo
