Different world

Warning: Spoilers
A fun, surprisingly old-fashioned episode of the show. We're in another world here, far away from the glamorous Riviera, instead rural Ireland, all green and quiet. Templar has to unpick an implausible story while also saving a maiden from the clutches of some dastardly villains. Noel Purcell is a hoot in support.

Good old-fashioned fun

The Saint investigates when a girl claims to be Hitler's daughter and learns that she's quite a fibber, and that's what makes this episode, set in rural Ireland, so fun. It's lighthearted, has twist and turns and has some good chase scenes.

Put the critical faculties aside and enjoy

Possibly the best episode of series 5, this is an improbable tale of ruffians, duplicitous females, and plenty of swash and buckle, with the feel of some of the more light-hearted programs of the earlier black-and-white series, and set in a mythical Ireland of tinkers, poitín, and blarney that probably never existed in the 1860's, let alone the 1960's.

Nevertheless, if you can suspend your disbelief for long enough, it's an enjoyable romp, with its tongue firmly planted in its cheek and enough twists and turns to satisfy the most Machiavellian of plot-hounds.

A bundle of fun

Simon Templar finds a beautiful woman crossing his path who claims she's Hitler's daughter, on the run from the SS.

But if she's not Hitler's daughter, who is she? This is an episode that'll keep you guessing right to the closing credits.

Given the utter paranoia around National Socialists since they invaded Hitler's erstwhile ally, the Soviet Union, this might actually be a typical fever dream of leftist TV writers using their convenient bugaboos.

Actually, this is a thoroughly enjoyable episode. If, like me, you appreciate the fun "Saint" episodes where Simon marches just inside the borders of the possible, this is down your alley.

Simon also demonstrates how the simplest solutions are the best.
