One extra star for the simplicity
hmoika7 October 2019
I agree with the other reviewer, that this episode was more staid than the usuals. However, I found it to be really charming and enjoyable.

Even the bunco artists themselves were rather charming in their own way.

Yes, the only thing that bothered me was Moore's dismal "Texan" accent. As the other reviewer duly noted.

Still, as I said, I thoroughly enjoyed this well done change of pace. It earned 8 stars for the pleasure I received......and extra star for the simplicity of the story!

Nicely done!

The Bunco Artists

Warning: Spoilers
Fans of The Paul Daniels Magic Show would immediately get nostalgic with a title called The Bunco Artists. One of his popular segments was The Bunco Booth, all about card sharks and con men.

Joyce Eade is a visiting American who tries to con elderly well meaning Sophie Yarmouth from church funds that she has helped raise.

The actual coup de grace is carried out by Richard Eade who poses as a special investigator on the trail of con artist Joyce.

It is he who takes the money from Sophie as part of his investigations.

Simon Templar gets involved as he is dating Sophie's actress daughter.

The Saint heads to the south of France posing as a Texan playboy to turn the tables on the cons artists.

It is a simple straightforward story. Not much in terms of action.

Unusually at least one of the con artists feels some guilt for their actions. You would have thought that they would rumble that the Saint and his accomplice was conning them!

Watch out for that accent!

Warning: Spoilers
THE BUNCO ARTISTS is a mid-series episode of THE SAINT, a little more staid than you'd expect given BULLITT director Peter Yates's presence at the helm. It's a story of confidence tricksters and their elaborate ploy to remove an old lady of her worldly possessions. I found this a rather slow-moving affair, not helped by unlikeable characters. Moore is stuck doing a 'comedy' American accent for nearly the entire running time and it's certainly a grating sound on the ears of the viewer.
