- In the middle Nineteenth Century young Honora Canderay (Helen Hayes), from one of the leading family in Cottarsport, Massachusetts, shocks her hometown by going with Jason Burrage (Anthony Quinn), a man from "the wrong side of the tracks."
Realizing they can never marry nor be happy in Cottarsport, Jason asks her to run off to California with him. Honora lacks the courage to defy her family and chooses to let him leave on his own.
Through hard work and some luck, Jason becomes a rich successful man in California. After years have passed, Jason decides to return to Cottarsport as a rich, successful man.
The news of his return delights Honora who has lived a lonely, regretful life. She plans to rekindle the romance and eventually marry Jason. However, she soon learns that he is planning to marry another girl from another successful family in town.
Still bitter about the way the Canderays and Honora rejected him years earlier, he wants revenge against the family. In an effort to outshine and humiliate the Canderays, especially Honora, he plans to use his money and success to buy a position of prominence in the town.
The news that Jason is planning to marry another woman of prominence in town embitters Honora. She has a tremendous desire for revenge against both Jason, his fiancee, and her family. The bitter Honora plots to take her revenge using a startling and unexpected means of retribution designed to destroy both Jason's marriage the reputations of he and his wife, as well as humiliate her family.
