- Young Lawyer: I object to this presumption of guilt.
- Lamar Kendall: ...Who are you?
- Young Lawyer: My name is Dilson; I'm a practicing lawyer from El Paso, passing through here on railroad business.
- Lamar Kendall: Well, my name is Kendall - Lamar Kendall. We're not in El Paso; we're not practicing. So if you'll stand aside and be quiet, we'll dispose of this case.
- Hattie Mae Warren: At least she can always remember he died a hero. A woman's got to believe that about the man she loves.
- Lamar Kendall: Even if it isn't true?
- Hattie Mae Warren: If she really loves him, it's got to be true.

- Dude: My wagon was missing - no sign of Nancy. Where is she?
- Lamar Kendall: Over with Hattie Mae Warren, the dressmaker. Think you can find her?
- Dude: ...I can find her now.
- Lamar Kendall: Could he have gone for help?
- Bart Craddick: Mm - it coulda happened that way. At least, he wasn't there for the attack.
- Lamar Kendall: Mrs. Wheeler says he was. She saw him shot down, tryin' to save some children, just before her team bolted.
- Bart Craddick: She says that?
- Lamar Kendall: That's what she says. She saw him die.
- Bart Craddick: Then he must be dead.
- Lamar Kendall: And you must be mistaken.
- Bart Craddick: And I must be mistaken.

- Narrator: This is Arroyo - west of the Rio Grande, in the Territory of New Mexico. It's the year 1883, and the town is recent, raw and rough. I reckon this is what you'd call a one-man town, what there is of law and order bein' represented by Lamar Kendall - who deals out his own brand of justice.
- Bart Craddick: It'll look like you two killed each other. That way, I'll be in the clear, and Nancy Wheeler will be a sure enough widow both ways from the nine-spot.
- Lamar Kendall: You're gonna have trouble with Nancy. She's not overly fond of you.
- Bart Craddick: She will be. I'm not a man that runs away from a woman.
- Lamar Kendall: ...You're not drunk.
- Dude: No... I was waiting here for you, when I saw him come in the back. So I spilled the brandy and stretched out across the desk.
- Lamar Kendall: Why?
- Dude: I was afraid of him...
- Lamar Kendall: You got over it in a hurry.
- Dude: I got over it - but not in a hurry.
- Lamar Kendall: We're not settling this according to territorial statutes; we're settling this according to me.
- Lamar Kendall: According to the statutes of all civilized communities, the removal of a body from a grave without permission of a duly constituted court is a serious crime. Craddock, who gave you permission to dig up the deputy?
- Bart Craddick: Nobody. I was accused of murder; the proof of my innocence was buried in the ground - so I dug it up.
