John Robbins Mohler was a Department of Agriculture administrator as well as a veterinarian and pathologist. As well as his work against "hoof and mouth" disease, he was instrumental in establishing the tight inspection of meat thoughout the country. His later development of a hog cholera serum aided in the growth of the hog industry.
To eradicate Hoof and Mouth in deer and livestock in this 1924 outbreak of the disease approximately 109,000 farm animals and 22,000 deer were destroyed. Two more major outbreaks occurred subsequent to this one, an outbreak in 1929 and another in 1932. Both were limited to hogs and in isolated areas of Southern California. The success of the eradication measures depicted here have thus far contributed to eliminating future outbreaks. Since 1932 and as of 2019, no other Hoof and Mouth Disease outbreaks have occurred in the U.S.
