Daniels returns temporarily for a procedure. She expects to be embraced by her former colleagues, but this is not to be. While she is there, her roommate, a terminally ill elderly patient, is killed. She is the prime suspect. Morrison and his family are threatened by the guy who raped him in prison. Mark's old rival is setting up shop in his house. Ehrlich and Popendrao continue their affair. Interesting times are ahead.

The story about the patient receiving a lethal injection is part of a season 5 arc, where a bunch of mercy killings take place at St. Eligius. The first one of these deaths occurs when Shirley (Ellen Bry) is at the hospital as a patient, and everyone naturally assumes she did it, since she was guilty of killing Peter.
But after some sexy talk with her old pal Wayne Fiscus (Howie Mandel), Shirley returns to prison, never to be seen again on the show...and another mercy killing occurs a short time later. This means Shirley cannot be the culprit since she's no longer at the hospital and is now back behind bars. Someone else on staff is putting sick elderly patients out of their misery. I won't spoil who it is, but it is revealed near the end of season 5.
