- The Enterprise encounters two duo-chromatic and mutually belligerent aliens who put the ship in the middle of their old conflict.
- While on a mission of mercy, the Enterprise comes across a shuttle craft stolen from Starbase 4. Its occupant is Lokai, a humanoid who is exactly half black and half white. Soon his pursuer, Commissioner Bele, arrives on board demanding that Lokai be turned over to him for transport to their home planet where Lokai has been convicted as a terrorist. Both men have extraordinary powers and it turns out that the pursuit has lasted 50,000 years. Their hatred of one another is racially based and, despite attempts by Kirk and others, they are not prepared to reconcile. The pursuit ends on their home planet where they learn the fate of their races.—garykmcd
- While on a vital mission to decontaminate the entire planet of Ariannus where a terrible disease rages, the Enterprise encounters, in rapid succession, two small vessels, each with one lone humanoid occupant, whom both end up on board. The men are from a single planet but of two genetically most improbable races, left and right halves of the skin being either white viz. black or the other way around. The pair are hunter and hunted. Lokai is a fugitive belonging to a slave race in rebellion and is therefore relentlessly chased throughout the galaxy by commissioner Bele of the arrogant master race. Even on board, their obsessional fight resumes, with Lokai haranguing for support while Bele abuses his extraordinary mental power to bend the ship to his will and deliver Lokai to their home planet. This behavior delays the ship's crucial mission far too long, leaving Kirk no other choice than to bluff by starting the ship's self-destruct sequence.—KGF Vissers
- While on a mission of mercy to planet Ariannus which is besieged by a bacterial infection (to decontaminate it), the Enterprise comes across a shuttle craft stolen from Starbase 4, about 2 weeks ago. Spock says that the atmosphere of the craft is leaking and Kirk brings the craft on board.
Its occupant is Lokai (Lou Antonio), a humanoid from planet Cheron (which is on the opposite side of the galaxy and very far from their present location), who is exactly half black and half white. Lokai wouldn't reveal why he stole the shuttle-craft and what his mission was. Soon, The Enterprise finds itself being tracked by a vessel, which they can sense, but not see. The vessel is on a collision course with the Enterprise, but disintegrates just before the collision. Lokai's pursuer, Commissioner Bele (Frank Gorshin) (who is also half black and half white), arrives on board demanding that Lokai be turned over to him for transport to their home planet where Lokai has been convicted as a terrorist.
Lokai accuses Bele of torturing his people, and treating them like savages. While Bele says that his people took the mission of educating the savages and elevating them. Lokai says they were being trained just to serve the masters, and he for one was not prepared to be a slave. Lokai says he tried to free his people and failed, and Bele says these things take time and what Lokai started was a revolution which was extinguished. Bele wants Kirk to take them both to Cheron, but Kirk intends to decontaminate Arainnus and then return to Starbase 4 and hand the duo off to the authorities. Bele finds that unsatisfactory and soon the Enterprise is off course all by itself.
Both men have extraordinary powers and it turns out that the pursuit has lasted 50,000 years. Their hatred of one another is racially based and, despite attempts by Kirk and others, they are not prepared to reconcile. Bele tells Kirk that the ship is under his direction. Bele cannot be impacted by phasers either. Kirk engages the self destruct sequence to force Bele to relinquish control of the ship. Bele agrees, but requests Kirk to take them to Cheron after his mission on Ariannus is completed.
In the meantime Bele reveals to Kirk that Bele and Lokai are not the same. He is white on the right side of his face, and Lokai on the left. Bele allows Kirk to complete his mission on Ariannus and now disables the self destruct mechanism of the ship. He once again takes control and takes the ship to Cheron. Once there, Spock finds large uninhabited cities. All the citizens of the planet are dead. They all died because of the hate. Kirk invites them both to give up the hate, and live with the Federation. But then Lokai and Bele both transport down to the surface of the planet to continue their chase. Enterprise leaves them to their fate and returns to star-base IV
