Famke Janssen was supposed to play Jadzia Dax in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) the following year. Janssen turned down the role to focus on her film career, and it eventually went to Terry Farrell. According to composer Jay Chattaway, the Kriosian musical instrument was represented by a Balinese Gamelan instrument. The producers brought in Balinese musicians to provide the piece of music heard in "The Perfect Mate."
Max Grodénchik would later play Rom in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), a far less devious Ferengi than the one he plays here.
