Both Starsky and Hutch get to help wayward people in this episode. I guess they have nothing better to do in their spare time from catching bad guys.
Hutch is apparently some kid's "Big Brother". The kid's friends don't think he should be friends with a cop. The very understanding Hutch stands by while the boy sorts out who his real friends are.
Meanwhile, a former classmate of Starsky's turns up as a victim of a robbery. She has lost her way in the years since she was a successful model and is now a destitute drunk. Starsky takes her home to help her dry out while at the same time protecting her from the robber who wants this witness dead.
This is not a bad episode and it's not that I dislike it. It just puts Starsky and Hutch in the position of being saviors instead of cops. Starsky spends most of his time comforting and encouraging the woman, while Hutch works on the case. In the end, they both manage to get through to their respective lost and confused souls, but I would rather see them doing their jobs as cops. They don't need to save the world. I still enjoy PMG and DS when they are playing these characters in Season 1, but I can see that they are being pushed into roles that can't be sustained. They can't keep being supermen.
At the end, Starsky reunites the lady with her parents and drives quietly away before he can be thanked. If only he had had a horse instead of the Torino. That's what was missing in this episode - their white 10-gallon hats and a couple of trusty steeds.
