In 1869, Commanche Chief Tosawi (b.1805/1810, d. 1878/1880) reportedly told General Philip Sheridan (1833-1888), "Tosawi, good Indian. " Sheridan supposedly replied, "the only good Indians I ever saw were dead." Eventually, his response was remembered as "the only good Indian is a dead Indian."
