When long-time Antioch Marshal Tom Ogburn kills the son of a prominent citizen after a Wells Fargo robbery, one of the town's shady businessmen, Webb McCloy, convinces the city counsel to replace the veteran lawman with the local casino's bouncer, Nick Breese. Jim Hardie, Special Investigator, is sent by the Fort Worth office to investigate the robbery and try to recover the stolen money. He knows the history of Ogburn as well as many of the other people involved. He suspects that the young man who was known to be honest and hard working was actually part of the hold-up gang and the star packer was tricked into killing him.
