When Hyde's dad according to Kitty's hospital file turns up, lawyer William Barnett (Tim Reid), he turns out to be African American. Everyone pretends not to mind or even notice, and it becomes mighty awkward in Red's living room. Eric claims that he loves The Jeffersons show. Kitty breaks that silence by pointing to William that he is African American, yet Hyde is Caucasian.
Hyde is, of course, happy to meet his African American dad, as that explains his Afro, his coolness and his fear for "the man". William owes a chain of record stores and hates cops. William and Hyde agree that there was a conspiracy theory behind the assassination of JFK. William says that he met Hyde's mother years ago and she ran off. He reckons that Hyde mother married another man and told Hyde that he was this other person's son.
Kitty suggests that she knew William had money and Jackie made a comment about Hyde inheriting it. William is alarmed to find that the family knew that he was rich, before he was invited to the house to meet Hyde. William thinks Hyde needs money and that is the main purpose of the meeting, and hence offers him the same. Hyde is offended and leaves. Hyde says that he never needed anything from his father while he was growing up and he certainly does not need anything now. Foreman's kick William out. Red says that he has raised fine young men, and William's assumptions were insulting to the entire family.
William comes back and apologizes to Hyde and offers to take him for a beer or something. William says that he saw a little bit of himself in Hyde.
