THIS MAN DAWSON – Fight Game - 1959

This is episode 10 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.

This one starts with a boxing manager being worked over by several mob boys for not "joining" the association. The man is found sometime later in a less than alive state. The Police are unable to find any witnesses. Police Chief Andes brings in all the boxers and staff from the boxing club for a chat.

It soon becomes obvious that everyone is scared of the local mob boss, Joseph Vitale. All the possible witnesses are terrified they will also be pushing daisies if they talk. Andes pulls in the mobster for a private talk. Andes tells Vitale that he intends to end Vitale's reign of fear, no matter what he needs to do. Vitale laughs it off, and just offers Andes a bribe to see things his way.

Andes has his Police lean heavy on Vitale and his rackets which really starts to annoy the gangster. He sends around a couple of his boys, including ex-pug, Johnny Indrisano to "convince" Andes to play ball. Andes turns out to be no slouch in the self-defence area and collars Indrisano and company.

Andes gives Indrisano a solid bit of third degree and breaks the thug. The henchman gives up his boss as well as details on the rackets and crooked cops on the take. Andes himself handles the arrest of the less than amused Vitale.

A very dark, and intense episode of a rather unseen series. The series was produced by William Conrad and Elliot Lewis with Lewis directing this particular episode. The cinematographer on the episode was Edward Cronjager. Cronjager was well known to film noir fans for his work on, I WAKE UP SCREAMING, HOUSE BY THE RIVER, THE CAPTURE and DESERT FURY.
