With Robert Horton and Terry Wilson leading the Wagon Train until a new wagonmaster can be found, Horton comes across Joyce Meadows and her young son Dennis Holmes out on the desert, her husband John Lasell is searching for water and/or help. Later on they find Lasell, but four men recognize him from the Civil War.

Specifically from Andersonville Prison the hellhole of the South. A lot of Union soldiers died there from disease or malnutrition, the South had no rations to spare. Lasell ratted out 14 of his comrades who were making a break and four of them who survived to tell the tale, Ron Hayes, Perry Lopez, Morgan Woodward and Willard Waterman lived to survive and they have a blood oath to get him.

The revelation in this episode is Willard Waterman who normally plays avuncular types, Waterman being best known for the television version of The Great Gildersleeve. With a beard and mustache and a most serious demeanor Waterman is unlike you ever saw him before.

To see Willard Waterman playing more than a Great Gildersleeve or variation on same I really urge you see this Wagon Train story.
