WHISPERING SMITH "The Devil's Share" 1961

WHISPERING SMITH was western star Audie Murphy's attempt at headlining a series. Murphy plays a member of the Denver Police Force in the late 1860's. The series follows Murphy and his partner, Guy Mitchell, as they chase various unsavoury types and bring them to justice. The series ran for 26 episodes between May and November 1961.

This episode is the third of the production run.

Rancher, James Lydon is just sitting down for his morning meal when his brother, Clu Gulager enters. Gulager has been up north working on the new railway. Gulager has been riding hard and long to get back to the family ranch. He heard that Lydon was getting married. Gulager is a tad choked that his brother is hooking up with his old girl, Rosemary Day. Gulager still carries a torch for Miss Day.

The dispute turns deadly when Gulager grabs up a large knife and sticks his brother with same. He then breaks open his brother's strong box and loots it of 1200 dollars. He grabs the knife and a bloody towel and heads off to bury same.

The next morning he sneaks over to the next ranch, there, he hides the cash and lifts another knife from the kitchen. He of course makes sure nobody sees him. By this time, his brother's body has been found and taken into town. The Denver Police has their man, Audie Murphy and his partner, Guy Mitchell look into the murder.

Murphy notices right off that there is no knife at Lydon's cabin. The two men also find the broken into strongbox. It must have been a robbery gone deadly. Now Gulager rides up. He asks where is brother is. He tells Murphy that he has been riding hard to see his brother get married.

The Police soon have a suspect in the man who discovered the body, Otto Waldis. Waldis just happens to be from the ranch where Gulager hid the money and lifted the other knife. Gulager is soon stirring the pot claiming that Waldis and his brother had bad blood between them.

The Law searches the Waldis cabin and of course find the cash. They also see that there is a knife missing from the set hanging on the wall. It looks like the Law has their man. Murphy though smells something rotten. He learns that Lydon and Waldis had a deal in place for Lydon to buy the Waldis place. So why would Waldis kill him? Gulager though overplays his hand by continuing to plant evidence against Waldis. Murphy enlists the help of Miss Day to lay a trap for Gulager. The trap works and Murphy catches the man with the key piece of the puzzle, the knife. It looks like a stretched neck is in Gulager's future.

This is an entertaining episode with Gulager shining as the murderous brother.
