An elderly man has been hanging around the airport for days, and no one has had the gumption to ask what he's doing there. Fay is somewhat taken with the man, and she musters up the courage to ask him. He tells her that he was a hat salesman from New Bedford, and one day made a deal with God that if God helped him fly around the world, he'd willingly die. He flew west, and after two years, has come all the way around to Nantucket. Now that he's only 40 minutes from home, he's reticent to finish the trip, because he's sure he'll then die. Fay tries to convince him to finish his trip, but then starts to regret giving that advice. Meanwhile, Helen is auditioning for a position in the orchestra, and has to decide whether to take Brian's advice to dress sexier to impress the conductor, or take Joe's advice to rely solely on her musical ability.
