Worzel's Washing Day

I watched this episode back in 1979 and was immediately enchanted. It helped that I had read the Worzel Gummidge books at school.

Also it starred Jon Pertwee and I can remember him as Doctor Who.

The first episode very quickly gets into the action. Mr Peters is moving with his young kids to a caravan in Scatterbrook Farm.

Son John immediately notices a scarecrow who is moving in the field. Later the scarecrow is speaking to the Crowman, who created the scarecrow. His sister Sue needs more convincing.

Later in the evening Worzel turns up to collect the umbrella that the kids borrowed when it was raining in the field. He also helps himself to Mr Peter's coat as well as he clothes on the washing line.

Adapted by the formidable duo of Willis Hall and Keith Waterhouse. It eschewed the English mystically folklore sensibilities of the 2019 BBC version.

It goes for mischief and comedy. With a hint of darkness which is very much the Crowman in the first episode. Adding a strangeness to the story.
