- When a dead baby is found in a cardboard box on a church steps, Chris Matthews comes forward to say that he has seen a pagan sect, led by the unsympathetic Dr. Dayton, saying, "Bring forth the child" in a midnight ritual. Lucy investigates the sect but the real key to the mystery lies with Wycliffe's boozy friend Bill, whose wife has just left him and who is staying with the Wycliffes with his withdrawn teenage daughter.—don @ minifie-1
- A 10-day-old baby girl is found dead on the steps of a village church - she has been strangled. Local investigations prove inconclusive and the baby's identity cannot be discovered despite appeals in the media. Meanwhile, a family friend and his daughter arrive to stay with the Wycliffes much to the annoyance of Charlie and Helen's son who has to give up his room for the guests. The friend's wife isn't with them and he offers no explanation for her absence, despite hitting the bottle late into the night with Charlie. A local man comes forward and reports seeing a local Pagan group holding a ceremony in the woods the night before the baby was found. The witness says that they appeared to be lead by a local doctor and he also reports seeing the doctor asking for the baby to be brought to him during the nocturnal rite. Are the Pagans connected to the baby's murder or is the answer closer to home for Inspector Charlie Wycliffe?
