Hoby Gilman (Robert Culp) returns home to Crawford Texas after the Civil War had ended. Hoby had seen so much killing while he was fighting for the Confederates that he is sick to death of killing and guns. He just wants to return home to Crawford and live his life in peace.
Upon returning he has found that Colonel Boyd Nelson, a devote Rebel, is staying in Crawford. Now it seems that Nelson, and his gang of other former rebels, are controlling the town. Nothing happens in the town without Colonel Nelson's approval. That even includes the local Sheriff.
When a Texas Ranger rides into town to arrest Boyd for some of his criminal actions, Colonel Nelson gets one of his gang members to shoot the Ranger in the back right in the middle of the local citizens. Colonel Nelson then declares that anyone wearing a Ranger badge is considered an enemy. The only person to pick up the badge will be Hoby Gilman- but he will do it on his own terms.
Robert Culp and Gary Merrill both did an excellent job of playing both the good and bad sides of the human element. The only draw back was the 30 minute time limit where the story had to be rushed toward the ending. There was a lot of time spent on the back-story to get the viewer to understand all the elements in the tale. By the time for the climax, it just seemed to happen way too fast. Not that it took away from the story but it was just so interesting you wanted the episode to continue. Glad that Four Star was able to sell the idea of the show to CBS for a series called "Trackdown"
