- When Lister is revealed to be a Mechanoid and Cat disappears from existence, the crew realise that they are flying through reality-changing unreality bubbles. The only way they can escape this mess? With the help of their future selves.
- Starbug enters a fog in space containing devices that create false realities, where the crew find a time machine, where they meet themselves 15 years in the future and engage in a space battle, when they learn their future selves are corrupt time travelers who are experiencing the very best of history.—Daniel Williamson
- The situation on Starbug is looking grim, all trace of Red Dwarf is lost, supplies are running low and the morale is thin, Rimmer holds a morale meeting as an excuse to describe what he hates about the others, the autopilot alarm is sounded and the crew take to their stations, Starbug flies into a fog and a small explosion knocks Lister out. Kryten examines a wound on his arm and finds Lister is a robot, a series-3000 model, human lookalikes, they were recalled due to human's finding exact duplicates unsettling, many escaped dismantling, Kryten asks to be the one to break the news to Lister when he wakes, Lister awakens and Kryten breaks the news along with a list of duties, enraged that Lister trained him to act more human when he is a droid himself.
Kryten takes the pilot duties when Starbug hits another jolt, results come in on the computer, the fog is a defense mechanism spewed by a Space Corps ship to protect the powerful technology on-board, the fog creates bubbles of unreality, Kryten realizes they been through one which created the illusion that Lister is a mech, this is confirmed when Kryten examines Lister's wound and finds it is indeed organic. Starbug flies through more unreality bubbles, Kryten suggests a safe workaround, they'll go into stasis until they're through the fog.
Three days later, Starbug makes it through the fog and finds the source, a derelict ship from the 28th century with time-travel capabilities, the crew strips out the drive and install it on their ship, they test it and travel back to 1421, the test works but they're still in deep space, they go back to where they were before and a craft is detected, another Starbug, it's them from fifteen years into the future, Kryten warns them not to make contact as organic minds cannot handle knowing their futures, he offers to interact alone.
Later Kryten leaves the cockpit, he seems upset about something, it's implied Lister is dead in the future, although there are four people on the future Starbug and one of them is David Lister, Kryten will meet them alone and the others are sealed in the sleeping quarters, Lister hacks the mid-section camera, he wants to see if he's one of the guests, the future crew boards, Rimmer is overweight and grey, Cat is balding, Kryten is in "disguise" with false hair and a suit, Lister is a brain in a jar.
The others see their future selves over the camera, Lister is dumbfounded at his future. The future crew's time drive has malfunctioned and they can only go forward in time, they need to copy components from the past drive to fix it, they have also become hedonistic, sampling only the best of existence, socializing with the worst people in history to get it. The present crew is repulsed at who they become and kick them off. While contemplating the encounter the future crew target the present crew, either hand over what they need or they'll open fire. Even though their future selves outmatch them, Rimmer opts to fight, the fight begins and Lister is killed, so are Cat and Kryten.
Rimmer takes it upon himself to save them, he takes a bazookoid to destroy the time drive, but the future crew fire on the present Starbug destroying it.
