Kino’s Noir boxes offer interesting noir-adjacent crime and mystery pix. This seventh return to the well of darkness brings up the organized crime ‘meller’ Chicago Confidential with Brian Keith and the more ambitious The Boss, starring John Payne and written by Dalton Trumbo. The third show The Fearmakers is a real oddity. Starring Dana Andrews and directed by Jacques Tourneur, it’s a political conspiracy tale about manipulating opinions with fraudulent polls. It sounds a lot like the fractured state of modern America, 65 years later. With commentaries by Jason A. Ney and Alan K. Rode.

"30 Rock" is gone, but Tracy Morgan was never meant to stay off the air for long. The "Saturday Night Live" alum is starring in a new comedy pilot for FX called "Death Pact," the network announced today. Created by Rob Long ("Cheers," "Sullivan & Son" and the National Review) and Tad Safran ("The Long Weekend," "Doogal"), "Death Pact" is a single-camera, half-hour comedy in which Morgan stars as a once lazy, pot-dealing assistance high school coach who comes back to his home town a decorated war hero, and enlists three down-on-their-luck friends and former students into following his harsh new self-help philosophy. Long and Safran are writing the pilot and executive producing it alongside Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of the Tannenbaum Company. The project is produced by FX Productions and will shoot this summer in New York or New Jersey. FX has been expanding its original programming slate in anticipation of...

Yesterday, Variety published the list of films that have made the cut of 20 for the race to get the Best Animated Feature Oscar. These 20 films will eventually be cut down to a list of 5 nominees, rather than the usual 3, and ultimately cut down to the one film that will be named Best Animated Film by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. A few of these animated films are yet to be released, and have not yet been screened by the Academy, so it's possible that some may be disqualified because of too much live-action mixed in, quality, etc. The final five nominees will not be announced until February 2, with the Oscars being presented on March 7. For your viewing pleasure (and our own need to inject our opinion into this process), we would like to present the following list with comments: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Instantly eliminated due to too much live-action and likelihood of...

Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – The hysterically misleading TV spots for Jody Hill’s “Observe and Report” make it out to look like another broad comedy that might even have a cute romance between stars Seth Rogen and Anna Faris. There’s nothing cute or predictable about “Observe and Report”. And that’s precisely why it works.
Those ads are like suckering family viewers into a Kevin Smith movie by advertising that he did a voice in the animated “Doogal” or pitching “Tropic Thunder” to the crowds that really liked that family-friendly Ben Stiller in “Night at the Museum”. Audiences have no idea what they’re in for.
Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “Observe and Report” in our reviews section. Drug use, extensive frontal nudity, extreme violence, date rape - this is material that’s not for the faint of heart. If you were remotely offended by last year’s Rogen...

John Boorman (The Tailor of Panma, Excalibur) is attached to direct The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a CG-animated flick based on L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s book. Oz follows Dorothy, who is swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. Along the way she befriends the Scarecrow, the Tin man and the Cowardly Lion, all of whom are convinced by Dorothy that the Wizard can help them too. The adaptation, which will be Boorman’s first animated film, maintains the tale's main characters and settings, but, unlike MGM’s 1939 film, it's not a musical. Produced by Laurent Rodon (Doogal) and Claude Gorvsky (The Magic Roundabout), Oz was adapted by Boorman, Ron Mita (S.W.A.T) and Jim McClain (Robots). It's scheduled for release summer 2010.

- Those Weinstein fellas are surprisingly no strangers to kiddie flicks. The Weinstein Company released Hoodwinked! in 2005, the all-star Shrek-a-like; an anachronistic and satirical telling of the classic fairy tale, "Little Red Riding Hood." Then in 2006, the company released The Magic Roundabout (released in North America as Doogal), a CGI pic about the adventures of a candy-loving dog. Also in 2006, the Weinsteins released the British-produced Lassie pic to Americans on DVD. And lastly, they were responsible for the 2007 American distribution of that highly memorable pic I'm sure you've all seen, Thunderpants, about a boy who is born with two stomachs, thus stricken with uncontrollable and absolutely devastating flatulence. Classic. According to Variety, the next kiddie flick the Weinsteins are going to handle will be a feature length, live-action musical based on the Jim Henson series Fraggle Rock. Cory Edwards, who also directed Hoodwinked!, will helm the project in addition to writing the screenplay.

It was a family get-together that proved to be fruitful for all as Lionsgate's Madea's Family Reunion had a sizzling debut in the top spot with a $30 million opening -- the biggest opening for the year to date. Written, helmed and starring Tyler Perry, the PG-13-rated comedy, which revisits Perry's stage play of the same name, was in 2,194 houses and racked up a sterling $13,688 per-theater average. Other highlights in regard to Madea's impressive opening: It was the second-biggest in Lionsgate's history; $8.1 million better than Perry's first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman; and was the third No. 1 film from the distributor in the past four months. While the ensemble Madea led the charge at the boxoffice this past weekend, the frame's two other new wide releases barely managed to pull in a dismal $7 million between them. Weinstein Co.'s Doogal, a G-rated animated film aimed at the family audience, placed eighth with $3.6 million from 2,318 locales, while New Line Cinema's Running Scared brought up the ninth slot with just $3.4 million from 1,611 sites.

The short was written and directed by Jeff Fowler and executive produced by Blur Studio co-founder Tim Miller. "We are pleased to be associated with the Weinsteins and have our short film open for 'Doogal.' " The G-rated Doogal features the voices of Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, William H. Macy, Chevy Chase and Daniel Tay. Gopher Broke is being developed into a full-length feature film and will expand the endearing story about a hungry gopher who devises a scheme that he hopes will provide him with a tasty snack.
