- Can a man disguise his voice and fool his wife over the phone? Rob thinks he has, using an Italian accent as "Dr. Benelli", reciting poetry. Was Laura flirting with a stranger or was she wise the whole time? How dolce fare niente, indeed.
- Did Rob prove a husband can fool his wife by disguising his voice, or is Laura just playing along? Though Rob's Italian accent as suave Dr. Benno Benelli sounds more like Bela Lugosi, Laura makes a phone date with the charming imaginary physician. Which is more important to Rob, pride in his comic gifts or faith in Laura's fidelity?—David Stevens
- In the development of a sketch for the show, Rob, Buddy and Sally argue about whether a husband could disguise his voice well enough for his wife not to know it's him. As such, Rob decides to telephone Laura and test the theory. Using an Italian accent and pretending to be a doctor, Rob believes he's fooled Laura. But after getting off the telephone, he's not sure he wanted to fool her as he comes to the realization that he was flirting with her and she was flirting back. When Rob goes home that evening, a seemingly more amorous than usual Laura has prepared a romantic candlelit Italian dinner for the two of them. Rob is pretty sure that Laura knew it was him on the phone, and that she's trying to get back at him. The following day, Rob telephones Laura using his Italian accent once again. He, as his pretend Italian doctor, makes a date with Laura, who accepts. Again, Rob is pretty sure Laura knew it was him. But Rob still has that small nagging feeling that perhaps he doesn't know his wife as well as he thinks he does. Perhaps only seeing if Laura kept the date will answer this question.—Huggo
