- Huckleberry Finn: [making up a fake family history] Anyway, things were just goin' all fine and dandy, and the one day, my sister Mary Ann, she ran off with eh, a drummer and it just broke poor old ma's heart. She took to ailing.
- Mrs. Grangerford: Oh, you see girls, you see what happens when a child thinks only of herself?
- Tom Grangerford: What happened to your brother?
- Huckleberry Finn: Well, eh... we, we found out later that he was kicked in the head by a mule. So hard, he died, but we didn't know that, then. That's why my pa sent out my other brother, Mark, to go and find him.
- Sophia Grangerford: Don't tell me he didn't come back either?
- Huckleberry Finn: Oh, he came back all right, ma'am. In a pine box. You see, eh, he was struck by lightning while he was chasing that ornery mule who killed Todd.
- Huckleberry Finn: [narrating] I was ready to light outta there so fast you wouldn't even see my shadow keepin' up to me. Only I knew I just had to hang around there long enough to find out what happened to Jim, I just had to!
- Huckleberry Finn: [narrating] I tell ya, anybody who don't believe in bad luck is either just a durn fool, or else he hasn't been dunped into the Mississippi after dark.
