Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Habit, Depraved) is back with a new werewolf horror movie titled Blackout, and THR reports today that it’s found a home at Dark Sky Films.
Dark Sky Films has acquired North American rights to Blackout, and they’re aiming to release Fessenden’s latest in theaters and on Digital outlets in the first quarter of 2024.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US.
The film follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf. He distances himself from those he loves and sinks deeper into solitude, his flashes of memory of his nighttime grisly acts manifested through...

Back in 2005, Ti West first appeared on the scene with an odd little horror film called "The Roost" featuring killer bats, the reanimated dead, and Tom Noonan as a horror host. His follow up, the thrilling "Trigger Man," flew by viewers and went mostly underseen, but when West released "The House of the Devil" in 2009, he established himself as one of horror's most exciting new voices. In the years that followed, West put out a slew of horror films, like "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever," "The Innkeepers," "The Sacrament," as well as contributing segments to "V/H/S" and "The ABCs of Death." Ti...

Diehard horror movie fans of the past 15-odd years may have started wondering what happened to Ti West. The meticulous genre filmmaker blended exacting formalism with shock and terror across a range of unnerving experiences: Everything from “The Roost” to “Trigger Man,” or “The House of the Devil” to “The Innkeepers,” had their fans, but no two movies were alike. Then, after the strange curveball of his zany Western “In the Valley of the Violence,” West stopped directing movies six years ago.
The intermission comes to a jolting finale with “X,” West’s A24-produced midnight movie that makes up for missed time. The ‘70s-set story follows a ragtag group of pornographic filmmakers and their cast as they head to a remote farmhouse to shoot their latest project, only to find themselves at the mercy of a psychotic older couple. Mia Goth does double duty as both a castmember for the production and,...

SXSW and Ti West have been to each other over the years. The Austin festival premiered his debut feature (The Roost) before going on to play Trigger Man and then breakthrough picture The Innkeepers, which landed West on our Winter, 2012 cover. Now he returns to Texas with, certainly, his starriest movie to date, and one that steps outside of the horror genre he’s best known for. Produced by his usual team alongside Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Pictures, In a Valley of Violence is a revenge western starring John Travolta, Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga and Karen Gillan and set […]...

As far as personal histories with a film go, Ti West’s The House of the Devil is one of the more transformative and memorable of mine. I first watched the film one night after hearing some chatter about it on the internet, and to be honest I didn’t really like it too much the first viewing. I found it to be quite boring save for the last 15 minutes that descended into truly nightmarish horror. Months went by, but I still couldn’t stop thinking about that film, so I rewatched it with a friend, and so begin my road to understanding how brilliant it is. A few years later it’s one of my favorite horror films (I even presented a paper on it at a conference), I rewatch it every Halloween.

Recently, CBS released the new, official,synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming "The Mentalist" episode 20 of season 6. The episode is entitled, "Il Tavolo Bianco,” and it definitely sounds like things will get pretty drama-filled for Patrick as he might get put on trial for the murder of Red John, and more! In the new, 20th episode press release: Jane's freedom is going to be at stake when a grand jury is empanelled to decide if he should be tried for the murder of Red John. Press release number 2: Jane’s freedom will be at stake when a grand jury is empanelled to decide if he should be tried for the murder of Red John. You think you know what to expect from Ti West by now. Like many horror movie nutcases, you saw The Innkeepers and/or House of the Devil, and maybe you went back and dug up The Roost and Trigger Man. Hell, you could have even given Cabin Fever 2 a fair shot. (Big mistake.) But if you think you know all of Ti West's tricks, well, prepare to be pleasantly surprised -- because the man's latest indie chiller may just be his darkest, deepest, and freakiest feature so far. It's called The Sacrament, it's one of those new-fangled "found footage" presentations, and it's another shining example of how you can cook up a truly haunting piece of horror with only a handful of cameras, a few good actors, a realistically creepy premise, and some subtle but obvious craftsmanship behind the camera.

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

When Batman Beyond premiered in 1999, I couldn't have been more excited. A show which featured my favorite super hero set in a futuristic Gotham City that resembled the world of Blade Runner was almost too much for my geek heart to process. It never disappointed me and assured fans of the Dark Knight that his legacy would never end. Twelve years after the last official episode of the series aired, the futuristic crime fighter's adventures continue in both Batman Beyond and Justice League Beyond comic titles.
Batman Beyond: 10,000 Clowns is a collection of the first sixteen print issues of the series, which were originally released in digital form. The trade paperback version is comprised of three different storylines entitled "The Trigger Man," "Legends of the Dark Knight: Jake," and "10,000 Clowns."
In "The Trigger Man," Batman comes face-to-face with a killer whose love for his dog makes him more dangerous than ever.

Ti West has chosen his next project. The young horror director, who’s worked on Trigger Man, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, The Innkeepers and The House Of The Devil, as well as a segment of V/H/S, is going to be making Sacrament his next project. We don’t know much about it beyond the title, but obviously it’ll have a religious touch.

We’re back with a new edition of the Indie Spotlight. Today’s feature covers the latest independent horror news sent our way, including a violent vampire tale, the birth of a new slasher, and much more:
The Ecstasy of Isabel Mann: “….the story of troubled teenager Isabel Mann (Ellen Mullen) who is seduced into an incredibly violent sect of day-walking vampires. Her class mates start to go missing and on the trail of the gruesome murders are two detectives; Witham (Neill Fleming) – who believes her to be the prime suspect and Barrett (Matthew Toman) – who has his doubts. Nothing is quite as it seems for those about her as the disturbed teenager runs amok killing at will in the woodlands by her home; aided by her vampire guides Mirjana (Mirjana Rendulic) and Alejo (Karim Elgendy) who are training her in the art of the kill – with horrifically bloody results for those closest to her.

The Innkeepers
American film-maker, Ti West, has made a name for himself in the horror genre with previous releases like Cabin Fever 2, V/H/S, The House Of The Dead and Trigger Man. He sticks to what he knows in his latest film, minimalist chiller, The Innkeepers.
At The Yankee Pedlar Inn, young employees Luke (Pat Healy) and Claire (Sara Paxton) are keeping the hotel ticking before it closes its doors for good. To alleviate the boredom, Luke has built a website tracking ghostly goings on and Claire is determined to uncover the identity of spirits haunting the place.
A guest many years earlier, Madelaine O'Malley killed herself in the hotel after being jilted on her wedding day. To avoid scandal, hotel management hid her body for two days before it was discovered. Rumour has it she has been spotted over the years since the hotel re-opened in the 1960s.

It's strangely appropriate that the rising career of filmmaker Ti West hasn't quite been meteoric, if only because his indie horror features (five and counting, including "The House of the Devil" and his experimental sniper-in-the-woods thriller "Trigger Man") are known for their slow burn. Reverential to cinema past while shrewdly and artfully revitalizing tired horror tropes, West's naturalistic stories fit right into the wheelhouse of his producing mentor Larry Fessenden—whose Glass Eye Pix label has unleashed most of the 31-year-old filmmaker's projects, including his latest spooker, "The Innkeepers." Speaking to its technical polish alone, his most recent movie marks another steady foot forward for Ti West. A seemingly lighter riff on the haunted house flick, "The Innkeepers" owes as much to its game cast (asthmatic heroine Sara Paxton, spot-on hilarious sidekick Pat Healy, blast from the past Kelly McGillis) as...

Ti West quickly established himself as a director to watch with The Roost, his first feature film, and he's built on that foundation with his subsequent work (Trigger Man and, especially, The House of the Devil). Even his ill-fated Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever showed great big flashes of his distinctive style. And by that, I don't mean he's simply done the same movie over and over again; instead, it's clear that he's attracted to a variety of material and makes the type of movie that serves the material best. While I wasn't bowled over by The Roost or Trigger Man -- in fact, some sequences in the latter film drove me friggin' nuts -- the films are transparently the product of an individual's creative...

Where would some of our favorite horror sequences be without their musical accompaniment? It goes without saying that the right music not only sets the tone of the film, but it can be just as important as the cinematography, actors, locations, and so on. One of my favorite composers currently working in the horror genre is Jeff Grace. As if assisting Howard Shore on The Lord of the Rings films wasn’t enough, the man has won numerous awards and accolades for his musical compositions. His most recent work can be found in the pitch-perfect Ti West film The Innkeepers.

If there's anyone who knows how to break into horror these days, it's Ti West, the 30-year-old writer/director whose feature films The Roost, Trigger Man, The House of the Devil and Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (which he disowned after extensive re-editing by the producers) have made him a well-known name and respected auteur in the scare community. The indie king of the slow-burn horror flick is back, and this time Ti West is bringing along an unexpected dose of wit, warmth, and weirdly effective character-based comedy. In many ways, West's The Innkeepers is a lot like his previous features (The Roost, Trigger Man, and The House of the Devil), in that you know it's a horror / thriller flick going in, but the director has a grand old time while building the tension, laying down the foundations of the (eventual) pay-offs, developing his odd characters in colorful ways, and (this time around) presenting long and amusing volleys of dialogue between the film's two lead characters. Luke (Pat Healy) and Claire (Sara Paxton) are a pair of mismatched (but amiably...

Apparently 2011 is going to be quite the year for the ghost story on the big screen.

West’s return to horror after the absolutely masterful The House Of The Devil, Innkeepers follows two employees on their final days at work, in a hotel that is on its way out of business. As guests begin to make their way to the hotel, things slowly change.

The House of the Devil is director Ti West’s note-perfect recreation of 80’s cinema, and unlike many retro movies, the film is without any of the self-referentialism or self-awareness that plagues those types of films. Instead, the movie plays out like a film lost to time before being unearthed and unleashed on an unsuspecting public, and I do mean unleashed! The House of the Devil is an unrelenting, unforgettable journey into the darkest realms of fear, and for me is easily the best satanic-themed movie since Race With the Devil and has already earned it’s status as a classic of the genre.

After writer-director Ti West's throwback horror film The House of the Devil became a modest critical and commercial hit last year, it occurred to me that there were probably a lot of people who didn't know about his earlier work. Because I was one of them, I tracked down copies of his two previous efforts, Trigger Man and The Roost, and figured I'd check them out sooner or later. After attending last week's SXSW "Directing the Dead" panel which Cinematical's own Scott Weinberg moderated and West participated in, it seemed appropriate that I watch them sooner, perhaps for work as much as pleasure.

If you are familiar with his previous work, it may be because of the slight buzz that came about with The Roost, an ultra-low budget flick that managed to get some fairly big web sites interested in it that got it some decent exposure. I fell for that buzz, watched it, and didn't get why it was being pimped around. When The House of the Devil started popping up after some early festival screenings, once again I took notice. I had heard good things, though mostly from fellow critics I routinely disagree with, so I entered said house tentatively and wound up spending the night rather comfortably. The House of the Devil is a slow-burning film that follows Samantha, a...

Following on from House of the Devil, his film about a young hipster girl very, very slowly walking up and down corridors and eventually crossing paths with possible 'Special Guest Star' devil worshippers, it seems that Ti West is to make another "truly terrifying" picture. One man's tedium is another man's terror, I suppose. Variety report that West's film The Innkeepers will be about "the last two staffers of a haunted hotel that's going out of business". At least they'll have each other to talk to. Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix are backing the film, as they did House of the Devil, The Roost and Trigger Man.

It can clearly be argued that this world is not left wanting for more vampire love stories. I don't know if all of this modern day blood lust and sexual ambiguity got started with Anne Rice or not but it certainly didn't end there. The past few years especially have brought us an increased amount of vampire laced content. I'm specifically thinking of HBO's successful, blood slurping and breast exposing True Blood, the Swedish coming of age vamp flick Let the Right One In (which is great by the way if you aren't afraid of subtitles, mediocre English dubbing, or Sweden), and of course the ever hyped chick lit Twilight movie based on the bestselling novel (although admittedly I haven't familiarized myself with that last one - some kind of self preserving aversion to all things Mormon prevents me from going there). So do we need another vampire romance story?...

House of the Devil is now playing in limited release. You can also access it on demand through many cable providers, and it is available to rent on Amazon.com. So, just in time for Halloween, I give you this review.
If you are a fan of 80’s horror movies, you’ll probably be delighted by this movie. I fear that today’s fickle horror fan, who is accustomed to frenetic stylings à la the Saw franchise, will be bored to tears by this very deliberately paced thriller. College student Samantha (perfectly cast Jocelin Donahue) is desperate to get an apartment in order to get away from her slutty dorm roommate who feels free to have sex in their room all the time. She finds an apartment, and a kindly landlady (scream queen Dee Wallace) who requires a modest deposit.
Samantha answers a dubious ad for a babysitter in order to make some cash.

To me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated House Of The Devil reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in The Signal, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror,...

With mainstream horror now defined by cruddy PG-13 originals and even cruddier remakes, Ti West's "The House of the Devil" couldn't have arrived at a better time. An unpredictable saga of teenage boredom and Satanic cults in which a college student makes the mistake of taking a babysitting gig at Tom Noonan's titular residence, West's third film (after "The Roost" and "Trigger Man") assumes the guise of an '80s genre flick -- from its title credits to its hair styles -- without ever treating those trappings as jokes. More faux-relic than cheeky homage, the film confirms West's status as a distinctive indie auteur, with his preference for long, languorous takes and his sincere interest in human behavior lending his horror show a uniquely ominous chill. While in Manhattan, he sat down with me to discuss the sorry state of contemporary horror, his unpleasant experiences making the still-unreleased...

Filmmaker Ti West has built up an interesting catalog of films within the horror genre over the course of the last several years. Having debuted with the impressive indie creature feature The Roost , then followed by the minimalist yet tense Trigger Man and eventually moving on to Cabin Fever 2 , West is back with his most ambitious effort, The House Of The Devil . The film follows college student Samantha Hughes, who is desperate to get out of her living situation and takes an odd babysitting job to help pay the deposit for her new pad. Unbeknownst to her, it also happens to be the evening of a rare full lunar eclipse, and her new employers aren't all that they seem to be. We sat down and chatted with Ti about the origins of the project, how he pulled off such an...

After a one-week break for bad behavior, Indie Roundup returns, refreshed and ready to sum up what's new and what's been happening in the independent film community.
Deals. Multiple deals have been made in the last two weeks, indieWIRE reports, notably involving higher-profile directors Catherine Breillat (Bluebeard, based on a classic fairy tale, will hit theaters next spring, courtesy of Strand Releasing) and Atom Egoyan (Chloe, starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Amanda Seyfried, due in the first half of 2010 through Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group). Of the latter, an erotic thriller, Monika Bartyzel wrote: "Chloe might not connect on a personal level, it does trap you into these lurid lives that flirt with every notion of bad behavior. I just wish they were characters I could love or hate, or simply feel for."
Director Chris Smith may be lower-profile, but fans of American Movie and The Yes Men (me!

Fango contributor Jeremiah Kipp sent along some photos and info on Contact, a new genre short film he created for New York City’s annual Sinister Six festival, hosted by Bryan Enk every October. “This is the final incarnation of the fest,” Kipp tells us, “and since I kicked it off four years ago with my movie The Pod, I decided to go all-out and do another harrowing drug/body-horror project.”
This year’s Sinister Six will be presented Saturday, Oct. 31 at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday, November 1 at 5:15 p.m. at Millennium Film Workshop (66 East 4th Street). Kipp describes Contact, shot in black-and-white hi-def, as “a dark urban fairy tale, a kind of reboot of The Pod distilled down to the most intense, graphic elements. I thought of the movie as an emotional hand grenade about a young woman [Zoë Daelman Chlanda, from Alan Rowe Kelly’s I’LL Bury You Tomorrow and Bart Mastronardi’s Vindication] who runs away from suburbia to engage in the...

From writer-director Ti West comes The House Of The Devil, a satanic thriller set in the 1980s starring Jocelin Donahue (Jt Petty's forthcoming The Burrowers), indie ingénue Greta Gerwig (Hannah Takes The Stairs, Baghead), Tom Noonan (Snow Angels, Manhunter), Mary Woronov (Eating Raoul, The Devil's Rejects), Aj Bowen (The Signal) and Dee Wallace (E.T., Rob Zombie’s Halloween). New York horror director Ti West (The Roost, Trigger Man) makes it clear in his new project The House of the Devil, that he is a fan of the conventions of 1980s horror. House of the Devil hearkens back to the days of late 70s grindhouse cinema. Sam (Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby. Movie blogging is cool and all, but I would argue that cinema's best use of the Internet is making rare fare available to the audience at large. That's slowly but surely starting to happen, and Crm (Cinetic Rights Management) is adding to the pile with a new arthouse deal. Teaming up with a bunch of arthouse film distributors, Crm will slip content online through their FilmBuff label, hitting desinations like iTunes and Hulu.
The plan is to make "award-winning and critically acclaimed films" available, and they've listed four titles thus far. There's Ti West's Trigger Man (Scott called it a "watchable curiosity"), Olivier Assayas' Demonlover (Jeffrey M. Anderson called it a "hopped-up, arty cover for a standard issue Hollywood thriller"), Mike Akel's Chalk (Jette said it was "a great illustration of how a movie can truly blossom with the right crowd"), and Margaret Brown's doc The Order of Myths...

Speaking of gorgeous posters, I wouldn't have even noticed this trailer today if it weren't for its amazingly beautiful poster as well. It seems a bit off to describe a creepy poster for a horror movie as "beautiful," but there is really no better word. The House of the Devil is a new 80's horror film written and directed by Ti West, the guy responsible for The Roost and Trigger Man previously. The trailer really isn't the greatest quality, which is actually what I think they were going for (kind of in a Grindhouse way). However, I already made my decision to go see this after stumbling upon its badass poster. Oh and it's red band, so watch out! Watch the official red band trailer for The House of the Devil: If you enjoyed this trailer at all, do yourself a very big favor and check out the poster for...

House of the Devil Directed by Ti West **** New York horror director Ti West (The Roost, Trigger Man) makes it clear in his new project The House of the Devil, that he is a fan of the conventions of 1980s horror. House of the Devil hearkens back to the days of late 70s grindhouse cinema, complete with a synthesized rock soundtrack (one of the best soundtracks to any horror film), a freeze-frame opening credit sequence marked with yellow title cards and a cast that includes Mary Woronov (Silent Night, Deadly Night) and horror veteran Dee Wallace-Stone (The original Hills Have Eyes, The Howling) who makes a small cameo. Set in 1982, House stars Samantha (Jocelin Donahue [1]), a college student preparing to move into an apartment with her friend Megan (Greta Gerwig [2]). In need of money to facilitate the move, Samantha responds to a babysitting gig for the Ulmans (Noonan, Woronov). You've...
