James Franco has posted an Instagram photo of himself shooting his film adaptation of the novel "Zeroville" alongside cast mates Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell. Rogen plays Viking Man, a character who is a thinly-disguised take on legendary writer/director John Milius. Ferrell's role is unknown, but he looks kind of like he's doing a take on producer Robert Evans.

Romance is perhaps the most coveted of the storyteller’s tools, one that can connect with anyone, yet open to an infinite number of perspectives, styles and genres. French filmmakers Stephane Berla and Mathias Malzieu have brought Malzieu’s own novel to life in the new computer animated feature film adaptation of Jack And The Cuckoo Clock Heart. Having co-directed the film and adapted his novel into the screenplay, Malzieu is something of a renaissance man, as he’s also the lead singer for the French rock band Dionysos. This plays a crucial role in the development of the film’s fantastical, poetic nature and musical fluidity.
Jack And The Cuckoo Clock Heart, also known as The Boy With the Cuckoo Clock Heart, tells the story of Jack, a boy born on the coldest day in the history of the world. So cold, in fact, that his heart is so cold and stone hard,...

The friendship between two damaged young women takes a turn for the murderous in Japanese suspenser “Roommate”, written and directed by Furuzawa Takeshi, who previously dabbled in horror with the likes of “Ghost Train” and “Another”. Adapted from a popular 1997 novel by Imamura Aya, the film was a high profile release thanks to the presence of two of the country’s current favourite actresses, Keiko Kitagawa, (recently in “Judge!”, and who went Hollywood with “Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift”) and Kyoko Fukada (“Kamikaze Girls” and “Yatterman”). The film opens with Keiko Kitagawa as Harumi, a young woman working as a temp, who gets hit by a car and wakes up in hospital, where she’s taken care of by a kind nurse called Reiko (Kyoko Fukada). The two become friends, and decide to move in together once Harumi is discharged, which works out pretty well until Reiko starts talking to herself and acting strangely,...

October is finally upon us, and that means it's time to dig into our favorite Halloween mood music – whether it's horror movie soundtracks, spooky-themed bands or dark soundscapes – to add that extra something to your homemade haunt, costume party, game night, movie night, or whatever keeps your Jack O' Lantern lit. Depending on your taste, just about anything we've covered here in our music reviews would fit the bill – but as a confessed soundtrack junkie, nothing gets me in the spirit better than the vintage vibe of classic horror scores. That includes original soundtrack albums, of course, but there are also some electronic and prog-rock artists out there who harness that same vibe for their own works, offering a new spin on old school. I was recently introduced to an electronic musician who not only pays creative tribute to those classic movie grooves, but has found creative and fun ways...

Juggernaut is a recently released zombie novel that was written by Adam Baker. The story deals with mercenaries in Iraq who encounter an army of the undead, and we’ve been provided with an exclusive excerpt to share with Daily Dead readers:
“Iraq, 2005. Seven mercenaries hear an enticing rumor: somewhere, abandoned in the swirling desert sands, sits an abandoned Republican Guard convoy containing millions of pounds of Saddam’s gold. The mercenaries form an unlikely crew of battle-scarred privateers, killers, and thieves, veterans of a dozen war zones, each of them anxious to make one last score before their luck runs out. After liberating the sole suriving Guard member from Us capture, the team makes their way to the ancient ruins where the convoy was last seen. Although all seems eerily quiet and deserted when they arrive, they soon find themselves caught in a desperate battle for their lives, confronted by greed,...

Dr Zhivago
By Kieran Kinsella
British TV specialists Acorn Media have decided to capitalize on the wintery weather by releasing the critically acclaimed 2003 version of Boris Pasternak’s snow swept epic Dr Zhivago. This 2 disc set is for mature audiences only and includes the unedited UK version of the 225 minute revolutionary drama. Additionally, the box set includes 70 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage including cast interviews, and you also get a mini-biography of Pasternak.
As an avid fan of the 1965 film version of this same book, I was a little bit skeptical when I first heard about the small screen version. However, my fears were without foundation as this ITV production is just as enthralling as David Lean’s version and many people would argue that it is also closer to Pasternak’s book. That being said, BBC veteran writer Andrew Davies does a very good job of converting the wordy dialogue...

Last night’s Halloween episode of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars was — as has come to be the norm with this dark-and-twisty show — rather explosive. Well, not literally explosive — although that wouldn’t be out of the realm for this drama. But so much happened when our Pretty Little Liars foursome — Aria, Spencer, Hannah, and Emily — jumped on that Halloween night Ghost Train with (most of) the rest of Rosewood. And Adam Lambert. Yes, Adam Lambert was there, too! He performed two songs, which were actually pretty fun to watch.

The people of Rosewood boarded the "Ghost Train" in the special Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars.
The girls - and a few of their boyfriends/girlfriends - headed to Rosewood's Halloween party aboard a moving train, complete with a small concert by Adam Lambert. Unfortunately for them, there were a few bad apples in the crowd, including Noel Khan, Mona and a few masked figures.
One of those masked figured was Garrett, who came to tell Spencer what he saw the night Alison died. Like Spencer knew, he, Melissa, Jenna and Ian were up in Alison's bedroom. Garret went outside with Jenna to let Ian and Melissa talk and Alison spotted them behind the Dilaurentis house. After some taunting by Alison, the girls got into a fight. Jenna picked up the field hockey stick and told Garrett to hurt Alison. Thanks to some subterfuge by Alison, Jenna thinks Garrett killed Alison.

ABC Family is bringing back the scares for the 14th year in a row with their 13 Nights of Halloween. This has become a staple of my October screening, and there are a lot of great inclusions this year. Halloween is coming up on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, which this year means one thing: a spook-filled ride for ‘A’ & Co. on the Rosewood Ghost Train.
The special standalone installment (airing Oct. 23, 8/7c) finds Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily, having finally put Nate’s recent reign of terror behind them, celebrating the holiday in adorably costumed-style. The four friends, however, have no idea what (creepy stalkers in babydoll masks) and who (evil Toby?) awaits them on the nightmarish train of terror.

There's a little over a month until the Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode and news about the special keeps trickling in. We've already posted a preview and a sneak peek and now ABC Family has released photos from the episode.
According to the network: "Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer are looking forward to some good old Halloween fun now that the traumatic events with Nate are behind them. But once aboard the Rosewood Ghost Train, the girls are in for much more than just some childish trick or treats. With "A" running amuck and unexpected party-goers popping up at every turn, this Halloween event becomes one killer party."
The girls are decked out in their Halloween finest, including Hanna in a Marilyn Monroe costume. You'll also notice that the creepy masked figure from last year's Halloween episode is making another appearance this year.

ABC Family has begun trickling out juicy tidbits for the "Pretty Little Liars" Halloween special, which is just under 40 days away, Liars fans. This first batch of preview pictures and sneak peek clip definitely have our gears turning.
The episode is titled "This is a Dark Ride" and the episode description reads as follows:
Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer are looking forward to some good old Halloween fun now that the traumatic events with Nate are behind them. There's still more than a month until the Halloween special episode of Pretty Little Liars and I'm eager awaiting it. Last year's spooky special went back in time to show us that Alison was "A's" first victim. But this year's Halloween episode will take place in the present, and this time "A" is haunting a speeding train.
ABC Family released a short description for the episode, appropriately titled "This is a Dark Ride": Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer are looking forward to some good old Halloween fun now that the traumatic events with Nate are behind them. But once aboard the Rosewood Ghost Train, the girls are in for much more than just some childish trick or treats. With “A” running amuck and unexpected party-goers popping up at every turn, this Halloween event becomes one killer party.
What does that tell us? Not much. That's where the sneak peek below comes in.

It’s a slow news day, so excuse the bad puns and feigned excitement. Possibly the most highly anticipated Lego production since Harry Potter And The Multi-colored Button Cubes, comes Lego’s Monster Fighters, featuring a spooky Ghost Train! Measuring out at 19 inches (compensating for something?), you can ride the train to the underworld with your pals, provided they are within the ages of 8 to 14. The set also includes an airplane with propellers and missiles, five mini figurines and all told, 740 infernal pieces. Check out the image above for the first look at the set.

J-horror Another gets a trailerMovies based on Anime have a tendency to be shall we say hit-n-miss, but the first teaser trail for director Takeshi Furusawa’s horror thriller Another at least looks the part. High end productions values and a decent sounding storyline (based on the novel by Yukito Ayatsuji) are a good start point, and Furusawa holds a (if perhaps more minor) place in the hearts of Japanese horror fans, for his fairly decent 2006 scare flick ‘Otoshimono’. Whether the film follows the original story closely, is hard to tell, but here a summary of the plotline via Wiki....In 1972, a very popular honor student named Misaki died partway through the school year in Yomiyama Middle School’s class 3-3. His peers, devastated by the unexpected loss, decided to carry on as if the student were still alive, going so far as to keep the desk in place and...

Never mind me wittering ten to the dozen about TV's greatest ever series, it seems that the world and his wife want to talk about Doctor Who these days. Especially when a brand spanking new series hits the airwaves – that's cause for all sorts of newspapers, magazines, websites and TV shows to promote, discuss and analyse the latest escapades of the good Doctor.
Take the latest season – NuWho Season Six - or Season 32 if we're including the entire history. There's been plenty of drama happening in the latest season, but equally, there's been equal helpings of drama dished up by various critics and scaremongers who can't resist making a meal out of the slightest issue. So before entering the maelstrom of The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon (Impossible Moon), it's worth having a look at some of the furore surrounding its début. Previously anonymous London lo-fi synthpop duo Summer Camp (Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey) have their first studio album coming up, Welcome To Condale, due for release on November 8. Warmsley (a folktronica singer-songwriter with two albums under his belt) and Sankey (a writer who's written for Platform and NME) originally masqueraded as a group of 7 Swedes hiding behind 1970s snapshots when they uploaded their first track to Myspace in 2009, a cover of The Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes For You". The track was picked up by music blogs, the mystery and intrigue added to the buzz and eventually they were tapped by Moshi Moshi, releasing "Ghost Train" as the group's first single.

Good news, Alien fans! H.R. Giger‘s wife, Carmen Scheifele, has reported the Swiss surrealist painter is working on the “Untitled Alien Prequel,” reports AvP Galaxy. She says that Giger is on-board for the prequel. It will be a 3D film – there might be two and that it takes place before the first film. H.R. Giger, of course, created the Alien creature as well as various set pieces in the original Alien, including the Space Jockey and its spacecraft.
Hans Rudolf “Ruedi” Giger is a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer. He won an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for his design work on the film Alien. Giger’s style and thematic execution have been influential. His design for the Alien was inspired by his painting Necronom IV and earned him an Oscar in 1980. His books of paintings, particularly Necronomicon and Necronomicon II (1985) and the frequent...

Kylie Minogue "Rare and Unseen" will be available on DVD, October 19.
Special feature include a film from the ITN archive, restored TV interviews from the past and rare films of the singer talking about her career.
"...The next title in the "Rare and Unseen" series looks at the Australian singer/actress Kylie Minogue. Starting her career at the tender age of eleven on Australian television, she achieved recognition through her role in the television soap opera Neighbours, before commencing her career as a recording artist in 1987. Her first single, "Locomotion", spent seven weeks at number one on the Australian singles chart and became the highest selling single of the decade. She has released nearly a dozen albums, has achieved worldwide success and is especially popular in Australia and the UK.
"Told through missing-believed-wiped archive interviews and rare and unseen footage of the singer talking, this insightful DVD is a worthy addition to any Kylie collection.

The wrap-party-to-end-all-wrap-parties took place this weekend, as Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Felton, and a host of other stars of the Harry Potter franchise said a final good-bye to Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, along with crew, family, and friends. Principal photography ended in June on the final two chapters, H arry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 , but it's been a long good-bye for many of the cast who were whisked away almost immediately to inaugurate the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida, postponing the final farewell by almost two months. It was expected that the wrap party for the final films could be a soggy affair, but it wasn't tears and champagne providing the moisture at the Warner Bros. / Jk Rowling-hosted fete. Rather, it looks like the carnival-themed event was caught in a heavy downpour of rain. According to the Daily Mail , however, the wet...

Nestled within the mammoth Maryland Film Festival, which runs May 6-9 in Baltimore, is a collection of avant-garde short films that will screen twice during the fest in a single block. The program will run for 79 minutes and will include 11 shorts.
A full listing of the short films in the avant-garde block is below, but I want to spotlight two in particular. The first is Michael Robinson’s Locking Gazes, described by the filmmaker as the “faded memory figment of someone never born.” You can watch some absolutely gorgeous clips from the film on Robinson’s Vimeo page. This seems like it’d be a sweet meditation up on the big screen.
The other short film to watch out for is Golden Hour by the prolific Robert Todd, which recently screened at the Boston Underground Film Festival. This film is described by the question: “What if the Looking Glass were,...

When people ask me about horror music, one of the first things that comes to mind is horrorpunk. The sound and look of horrorpunk is bloody, ghoulish, sometimes campy and always fun. One of the most well-known and prolific horrorpunk record labels is the German-based, FiendForce.

MADRID -- Spanish distribution house Notro Films said Monday it has picked up Spanish rights to eight movies, including Julian Jarrold's Becoming Jane, Sarah Polley's Away from Her and the final episode in the Japanese terror saga One Missed Call: Final.
The hefty shopping bag, which Notro takes home following this year's American Film Market, shows the ambition for the Barcelona-based distributor, which presently has Copying Beethoven in Spanish theaters.
"It coincided that Notro is growing and that we found a lot of films at AFM that were in keeping with the very clearly defined line of films that Notro handles," said Notro acquisitions' chief Raquel Luque. "If we're growing, it's clear we need to add to our slate."
Other titles picked up include Bruce Beresford's A Woman of No Importance, starring Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening and Lindsay Lohan, Terry Gilliam's Tideland, and the odd comedy Special, in which Michael Rapaport plays a man who acquires new powers after taking medication.
Also from Japan, Notro bought Yoji Yamada's Love and Honor and Takeshi Furusawa Ghost Train.

ADV Films has purchased North American rights to the live-action horror feature Ghost Train and the suspense thriller Synesthesia from Japanese entertainment conglomerate Shochiku, the companies said Thursday.
Houston-based ADV, a leading producer-distributor of Japanese animation outside Japan, plans to release both features and the TV series Le Chevalier d'eon, also purchased in the deal, before the summer, the companies said on the second day of the American Film Market.
The Anime Network, owned by ADV parent A.D. Vision, reaches more than 40 million households.
"We are very proud of the titles and hope their success in the U.S. and other territories mirrors their success in Japan," said Masaki Koga, head of international business for Shochiku, whose The Twilight Samurai in 2004 was the first live-action Japanese film to earn an Oscar nomination in 22 years.
