Legend of the Blue Wolves is the first yaoi movie I've seen in my life. Or at least, the first yaoi anime I actually bothered to watch in its entirety.
To my surprise, there was actually much more buildup than I was expecting and it takes some time before the first sex scene is shown on screen, feeling more like a plot-driven work rather than a mere pornographic production: That serves as a double-edged sword as the story is ultimately left unfinished, leaving many questions unanswered, concluding in a somewhat confusing cliffhanger.
Apparently, there were supposed to be 3 sequels to this OVA, but the company that produced it went bankrupt, so this is all we get. I think that it would have been interesting to see at least one continuation of this anime, since this was actually much better than other yaoi titles from the recent years, with ugly designs, uninteresting characters and lame plots that would be more fitting in one soap opera.
At least this had decent animation, much better characters and giant robots. And also, unlike in other Yaoi works, all the characters look like adults, and not like underage teens, a creepy trend that sadly is becoming more and more common in erotic Japanese animation, opposed to the much more mature designs from the eighties and nineties.
