Chicago – The man that practically invented the modern Zombie film genre had met his own demise. Director George A. Romero passed away on July 16th, 2017, in Los Angeles. He was 77. Romero launched a whole new wave of horror with “Night of the Living Dead” in 1968, and put Pittsburgh (Pa) on the film location map.

He was born in the Bronx, New York, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, which began his Pittsburgh connection. He stayed there afterwards, and formed Image Ten Productions, which shot commercials and (famously) a segment for the broadcast-from-Pittsburgh “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.” On a shoestring budget and using local settings, “Night of the Living Dead” was released in 1968. Directed and co-written (with John Russo) by Romero, it would immediately cause a sensation in the horror genre. After some cult...

When George Romero died at the age of 77, he was in the process of developing more zombie movies with the insightful Diy ethos that first put him on the map nearly 50 years ago with “Night of the Living Dead.” The horror community has embraced Romero over the years, and as the decades wore on, he went from being one of the genre’s most exciting contributors to its preeminent guru. Here’s an overview of the factors that contributed his legacy.
The Modern Zombie Movie
While the initial concept of zombies dates back to a mix of African and Haitian folklore, George A. Romero cemented the modern vision with his seminal 1968 classic “Night of the Living Dead.” While the word “zombie” is never uttered in the film, his spin on the lurching undead forever changed pop culture. The director cemented this legacy with five more films in the “Night of the Living Dead” series,...

Half a century after “Night of the Living Dead,” George A. Romero still isn’t done with the genre he helped create.
His latest is “Road of the Dead,” an automotive take on the undead he produced and co-wrote with Matt Birman, who’s stepping into the director’s chair after serving as second-unit director on each of Romero’s last three “Dead” pictures. There’s just one problem: The project has set to secure financing.

The two are headed to Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal later this month to change that, and Romero is excited about hitting the road and moving forward. Sometimes when I come across a story, I just smile. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost tend to make me do that, and on a side note I was ecstatic to see Nick Frost on Season 2 Episode 1 of Into The Badlands, which I hope I will have time to review today, as the show has taken a drastic turn.
These two fellows have created some hilarious movies over the years, and there has been a rumor that they are working on a new project. However, nothing will ever come close to the greatest Zombie movie ever made (yes Zombieland was awesome), Shaun of the Dead.
As it turns out, this movie was more than just fiction. Frost had a plan in place, and when talking with Inverse he described his "get outta zombie hell plan."

“The Girl With All the Gifts” had a strange and slightly convoluted origin, which in turn led to a strange, maybe unique creative process for both the novel and the movie. Short version: The movie isn’t really an adaptation of the novel because the novel was being written at the same time.
The first pebble in this very personal avalanche came when I was been invited by Charlaine Harris and Toni Kelner to contribute a short story for an anthology of dark fantasy and horror. It was the latest incarnation of an annual collection they edited together. Every year they would come up with a deceptively innocent, everyday theme and ask authors to produce a dark riff on it. In this instance the theme was school days.
But having said I’d contribute I couldn’t come up with any workable ideas. The deadline was getting closer, and everything...

If the latest “Friday the 13th” reboot setback has taught us nothing, it’s that for every horror film made, hundreds more were doomed to die on the development vine.
A new documentary series will explore these horror films that never hit the big screen for a number of reasons ranging from an unwieldy budget, a studio losing faith and more. In “Untold Horror,” you’ll hear first-person interviews from the likes of George Romero, John Landis, Takashi Miike and more.

The series will also include recovered footage, early sketches, concept art and more materials from the unmade film’s early days. For example, Romero cites how he made “Jacaranda Joe” in a documentary style but the film was lost. Apparently, “Untold Horror” helped find it. Watch the trailer below to see what else...

Cannibalistic killers in a post-apocalyptic landscape … are you yawning yet? Such is the unoriginal premise of Chris von Hoffmann’s feature debut, which reveals, if nothing else, its director's love and appreciation for genre films. The problem is that his low-budget effort, whose poster might as well be included in the dictionary definition of “derivative,” is nowhere near as good as its endless influences. Viewers would be far better off rewatching a Mad Max or Rob Zombie movie, or any episode of The Walking Dead, than paying hard-earned money to see Drifter.

Yeon Sang-ho’s South Korean zombie film “Train to Busan” opened in U.S. theaters in July, shortly after exploding into a box office phenomenon in its home country with a gross of over $10 million alone in South Korea. Mashing the wildest elements of “Snowpiercer” (passengers stuck on a train) and “World War Z” (rabid zombies that want to eat you alive), the apocalyptic horror sensation has a momentum like few other movies this year. Thanks to some virtuoso camerawork and adrenaline-fueled set pieces, “Train To Busan” will have you covering your eyes one moment and standing on your feet the next.

Although its home media release date in the Us hasn't arrived yet (but is right around the corner), the South Korean zombie film Train to Busan is already being eyed for an English language version.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the French studio Gaumont has acquired Us remake rights for Train to Busan.
Following its debut at Cannes earlier this year, Train to Busan has been a huge hit in South Korea, where it has grossed upwards of $83.5 million.
Here's what Gaumont CEO Sidonie Dumas had to say about the acquisition (via THR):

“Train to Busan” has had quite the year. “Doctor Strange,” the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, follows eponymous hero Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he navigates his way through an unlikely origin story that heavily involves the teachings of an enlightened elder – known as The Ancient One – who sets him on the path to both righteousness and cape-clad ass-kicking. In the original comics, The Ancient One is portrayed as an older gentleman of Tibetan descent. In director Scott Derrickson’s film, the character is played by Tilda Swinton.
Unsurprisingly, the project has faced continued criticism for its casting of Swinton as the character, though Marvel brass and the film’s creative team have long maintained that their casting choice came after the character was already changed with the express purpose to avoid racist undertones. As Swinton explained to IndieWire in a recent interview, the “Doctor Strange” team aimed to circumvent the original character by radically changing many of his trademark attributes.

“Night of the Living Dead” is something like the urtext of modern zombie movies, but that doesn’t mean George A. Romero sees much of a future for the franchise his 1968 classic launched. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that “The Monster” boasts (at least) one of the year’s best performances, but it does. In fact, that revelation arrives with as much of a jolt as any of the film’s immaculately-timed jump scares, which writer-director Bryan Bertino (“The Strangers”) unleashes with the discretion of a master and the patience of a monk. Like any great twist, it hides in plain sight from the start, and like any great twist, it reveals itself with maximum impact, delivering the chilly kind of shudder that doesn’t shake off with the closing credits.

Joe Swanberg has been cranking out movies for over decade, and his micro-budget character studies quickly became the paradigm for the current state of American independent film. While Swanberg’s profile has grown — he recently launched the Netflix series “Easy” — he remains tethered to his roots, and now he’s expanding them: With the Chicago-based production company Forager Films, Swanberg has quietly launched an effort to support the work of other filmmakers operating on the same scale he embraced early on.

“Oldboy” director Park Chan-wook’s well-reviewed Cannes competition entry “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia, October 21) marks the filmmaker’s return to South Korea after his 2013 English-language debut “Stoker.” His goal these days is to do one Korean-language film for every English-language film, taking advantage of varied stories and world-class actors.
Park’s deliciously twisted and kinky adaptation of Sarah Waters’ 2002 British novel “Fingersmith,” relocated set to the Japanese occupation of ’30s Korea, is a gorgeous and erotic portrait of two women, a con artist Korean servant (newcomer Kim Tae-ri) and her powerful Japanese mistress (Korean star Kim Min-hie, “Right Now, Wrong Then”), who band together to rise up against their male oppressors.

[Warning: Spoilers for “Train to Busan” are included below]
Yeon Sang-ho’s South Korean zombie film “Train to Busan” opened in U.S. theaters in July, and those who have gotten around to seeing it can probably tell why the film has become a box office phenomenon in its home country. Combining elements of “Snowpiercer” and “World War Z,” the energized horror flick follows a group of passengers who must survive a zombie outbreak while on a speeding train and features the kind of virtuoso camerawork and adrenaline-fueled set pieces that make you stand up and cheer.

Robert Downey Jr. landed a huge paycheck for Captain America: Civil War. The actor, whose contract had expired before the Captain America sequel, was reportedly paid $40 million upfront and a significant back end fee. This enormous payday, however, almost didn’t happen, so directors Anthony and Joe Russo and all involved had to consider other stories to tell. What was another story that was a […]

For a story where faith plays a pivotal role, it’s appropriate that two of the pivotal characters in “The Tenth Man” are perpetually off-screen. Just as writer/director Daniel Burman asks us to understand people and ideas we cannot see, the story of a middle-aged Jewish man’s Buenos Aires homecoming becomes defined by what keeps its attention. Focusing on the personal, it keeps its scope small, to mostly compelling effect.
Home from New York for the week before Purim, Ariel (Alan Sabbagh) spends most of his days reconnecting with the Jewish neighborhood in the Argentinian capital, forestalling an eventual reunion with his estranged father Usher. As the days pass before the holiday, Ariel offers his time at Usher’s charity, making deliveries to hospital patients and negotiating with the local butcher. Through his efforts to help out, Ariel spends more time with Eva (Julieta Zylberberg), a young woman...

It would seem, at least on paper, that the director of low-budget quasi-wrestling monster movie Monsters Brawl and the (literal) shit-monster movie Septic Man; teaming up the writer of the neo-classic Pontypool for a movie that encapsuates an American gothic vibe would not work. On the one hand you have someone’s whose work is filled with subtlety, on the other… shit-monster (and yes, I know Burgess also penned Septic Man)! Yet somehow, despite some lapses in judgement and a conclusion that falls off the cliff somewhat, The Hexecutioners really works.
From the offset, The Hexecutioners is completely overblown and overwrought. The film is scored like some kind of idiots guide to horror – queues hit all the notes that...

Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-Thon Part VIII – Design by Haunt Love
For years now, my good friend James Harris, proprietor of Doc Terror, has urged me to make the trip to Philly for Exhumed Films’ 24 Hour Horror-Thon. It sounded like an amazing time, but Philly is such a long drive for me that it never seemed reasonably possible. My wife and I discussed a way in which we could make it a trip for all of us. So, her and my son, along with her mother, came up and went on the Hershey tour, while I got my horror-thon on. With 4 people in the car, a ton of stops are going to be made. In total, it took us probably 13 and a half hours to make it to the hotel. I had only a few hours to sleep, before I would leave the hotel, en route to the Philly International House,...

Zombie movies can go deeper than the eaten flesh. We’ve seen social commentary wedged between the shambling (or the running) living dead on film and television before, and now Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision is moving forward on Curse the Darkness, a zombie film focusing on the exploited labor force of undocumented workers in the United States. Along with the film’s announcement comes its first poster.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jorge Michel Grau (the original We Are What We Are) will direct Curse the Darkness off a script by first-time feature scribe Brandon Maurice Williams. Elijah Wood and fellow SpectreVision operators Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller will produce the film, which will begin filming in Louisiana on October 27th and is now casting.

If you’re a regular reader of Daily Dead, it’s a good chance that you caught our coverage of The Battery last year as part of our Indie Spotlight. This indie zombie movie was a hit on VOD and it has been announced that Scream Factory will be releasing it to Blu-ray and DVD:
“Two former baseball players, Ben (Jeremy Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), cut an aimless path across a desolate New England. They stick to the back roads and forests to steer clear of the shambling corpses that patrol the once bustling cities and towns. In order to survive, they must overcome the stark differences in each other’s personalities—Ben embraces an increasingly feral, lawless, and nomadic lifestyle—while Mickey is unable to accept the harsh realities of the new world. Mickey refuses to engage in Ben’s violent games and longs for the creature comforts he once took for granted.
