Inspring Film, great main performance from main actor

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007, and found it to be inspiring yet challenging. It was the best short film that I saw in the 'Generations' section of the festival.

Kibera Kid is an authentic view into life for a young boy on Kibera, that at times, though fictional, felt like a documentary. Amazing insight into the world of urban slums in Africa.

The main child is really good, I was amazed to find out that he was really from Kibera, and not a professional actors. On the minus side, though some of the supporting actors not as good. Also it felt a bit short, could have been longer.

Great for anyone interested in street children in Africa, slums, and insight into this world. Check it out if you can.

Kibera Kid gives insight
mukinduri23 November 2010
KIBERA KID takes place in a large slum in east Africa. It gives a balanced view of life there and the choices youth face. There is a positive role model - the volunteer community leader who rescues the Kibera Kid from the crowd. Everyday life is shown is small touches, such as the opening scene with the children running to hear the Kibera Kid rap, the potatoes frying in an large pan, and the young girl peering through the hole in the wall to see what is going on. These glimpses into everyday life give KIBERA KID a sense of authenticity that makes life in Kibera accessible to the viewers. The main actor, Ignatius Juma, does a great job as Otieno. All of the supporting cast, especially Godfrey Ojiambo, the leader of The Razors gang are excellent. The film is engaging, while also educating. KIBERA KID can be enjoyed and understood by all ages. Check it out.

Kibera Kid shows local story and talent
mukindu23 November 2010
The short film Kibera Kid is an engaging coming of age story that takes place in a slum. The challenges the boy Otieno faces are challenges that youth face in many environments - how to survive without family support. The cinematography give the viewer a sense of being present in the slum. The living conditions are neither sensationalized nor sentimentalized. The acting, especially by the lead actor, Ignatius Juma is outstanding. The location, the story and the acting seem very authentic and give the viewer a balanced idea of slum life - both its strengths and challenges. One fact that people might not have realized is that there are community volunteers working for security within slums like Kibera. Suitable for all ages. Highly recommended.
