Compo the Communist!
keysam-0261022 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
During one of their countryside chats, Foggy discovers to his dismay that Compo harbours a desire to visit Leningrad and seems to have communist sympathies. The horror! (Of course no one else gives a damn, including Clegg, who gleefully joins Compo in a bit of Russian folk dancing back at the cafe)

As a result, Foggy decides they must all volunteer to help out with the local plans to celebrate the 1977 Jubilee, so they set off to see the vicar.

We are treated to a different marital dynamic at the Vicarage from the usual one seen in Summer Wine. Unlike most of the local couples, the Vicar's wife is very mousey & timid. Her husband loses his rag at the drop of a hat, breaking & hitting things and she's clearly frightened of him.

The trio are signed up, plus Sid who just wants to get out of going dancing with Ivy. Irritatingly for Foggy, Compo gets the role of Nelson - because he's the right sort of height presumably.

The vicar intimidates his wife into driving a tractor with the pageant float containing the trio and Sid attached - it does not go well!

It's quite a nice way to celebrate the Jubilee, without going so overboard as to make the episode unwatchable at this later date. Do feel sorry for Mrs Vicar though...

Floating by
Prismark1013 July 2016
To celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977 here is an episode to mark the occasion as our regulars get roped in by the local vicar played by John Horsley at the time better known for Reginald Perrin to take part in the Jubilee procession. They all get dressed up to take part in a motorised float, appropriately enough a ship, unfortunately the vicar's wife is a nervous driver which leads to chaos leading to an amusing climax.

Before this we get a little bit of politics from writer Roy Clarke, harking back to the days when Blamire was about, Foggy discovers that Compo is a socialist when he mentions that he wants to visit Leningrad. A fact that does not sit well with Foggy.

There are some nice one liners in this episode and a strange performance from Horsley as the vicar, I swear he has a tantrum when his wife was reluctant to drive the float.
