You know that there are some things you can only talk about so much, like your friends’ babies, your co-worker’s dreams, or just how amazing Robin Wright’s hair is on House of Cards? All right, fine, I can never say enough about the perfection of that blonde masterpiece, but I feel like I have absolutely nothing left to say about either Brandi and her horrible condition or Kim and Kyle and their irreparable sisterly bond. Just nothing left.Granted, Kim and Kyle are a lot more interesting than stupid Brandi, that’s for sure, but she is the one who takes up most of the episode. First we have to talk about how she met this 22-year-old Andre kid on a trip that is being extensively filmed, yet there seems to exist no footage of him rolling up on a Vespa, grabbing Brandi’s boob, and then saying,...

We talk to director Ari Folman about Waltz With Bashir, The Congress, his Anne Frank film, and his love of sci-fi, Nolan and Kubrick...
Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman fused poetic animation with brutal reality in his breakout 2008 film Waltz With Bashir, a personal account of the Lebanese conflict of the early 1980s. The Congress, based on the book The Futurological Congress by Solaris author Stanislaw Lem, is an altogether different animal, though it treads a similar line between dreamlike animation and unvarnished reality.
Robin Wright plays a 40-something Hollywood actress (loosely based on her own career) whose advancing years and capricious nature have made new jobs increasingly difficult to come by. Pressured by both her agent (Harvey Keitel) and a shark-like executive (Danny Huston) at Tinseltown studio Miramount, Wright agrees to have her likeness scanned into a computer. Afterwards, the younger, idealised CG version of Robin will appear in movies (but not science fiction,...

John LeCarre’s A Most Wanted Man has the author’s usual trademarks: unique characters conveyed with shades of gray, an intricate and creative plot, and an appreciation for the complexities of international politics. The last LeCarre film adaption Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, with its meticulous Cold War details and labyrinthine cloak-and-dagger plot, required the viewer to maneuver a dense story through many twists and knots. A Most Wanted Man is more straightforward, yet no less engrossing and it’s anchored by a powerful performance from Phillip Seymour Hoffman in his last role.
The setting is Hamburg Germany – where some of the 9-11 hijackers had planned their attacks. Here’s where Issa Dobrygin (Grigori Dobrygin), a young, sickly, frightened Muslim from Chechnya (or is he?) washes up on shore seeking refuge after escaping from Russia. He enlists the help of mother and son Muslim émigrés from Turkey who, in turn...

John Le Carré adaptations can be hit-and-miss affairs: not all of them can be Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. But we have faith in Anton Corbijn, the man behind Control and The American, who has directed A Most Wanted Man. The first clip from the film, which premiered in Sundance at the weekend, is now online. A Most Wanted Man finds Philip Seymour Hoffman playing rogue German counter-terrorism expert Gunter Bachmann. He’s trying to track down half-Chechen, half-Russian immigrant Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin), who may or may not be part a militant jihadist group in post-9/11 Hamburg. Issa has access to a very private bank account containing a legacy of dubious origin and it's not long before British, German and American intelligence agencies are paying close attention. To try to find his man, Gunter interrogates human rights lawyer Annabel Richter (Rachel McAdams), and things just get more complicated from there.

There are some films that are so iconic, so brilliant and influential that they become a part of the zeitgeist and are granted cultural immortality. Obvious contenders include Star Wars (1977), Jaws (1975), Dirty Harry (1971) and This Is Spinal Tap (1984), but it’s one of Tap director Rob Reiner’s other films that has quietly become a beloved treasure and which is finally available on Blu-Ray.
Adapted by celebrated screenwriter William Goldman from his original novel, The Princess Bride is a rip-roaring tale of swashbuckling, kidnapping, romance, action and the power of true love. When the beautiful Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) becomes engaged to Price Humperdinck (an excellent Chris Sarandon), several years after her true love Westley (Carey Ewles) is believed to have been killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts after going off to seek his fortune, she is kidnapped by a trio of dastardly hoodlums in order to provoke a war.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of The Princess Bride, director Rob Reiner, screenwriter William Goldman (also the author of the source novel) and stars Robin Wright (“Buttercup”), Wallace Shawn (“Vizzini”), Chris Sarandon (“Prince Humperdink”), Mandy Patinkin (“Inigo Montoya”), Carol Kane (“Valerie”), Cary Elwes (“Westley”), and Billy Crystal (“Miracle Max”) all gathered at NYC’s Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday as part of a New York Film Festival special event screening. This marked the first time in almost 26 years that they have watched the film with an audience, re-experiencing the saga of Buttercup and her Westley (and all swordsmanship and kissing involved). Throughout the film, which sold out the 1,086-seat Lincoln Center venue, attendees of all different ages loudly applauded and hooted for their favorite lines and for the first appearances of their favorite characters. They were worked up into a fervor, more closely resembling a ribald grindhouse crowd than one at a typical Nyff screening. This...

Westley and Princess Buttercup are together again!Cary Elwes, Robin Wright and the rest of the cast reunited last night for the release party for the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray of "The Princess Bride."We gotta say, 46-year-old Robin looked amazing on the red carpet, where she wore a plaid peplum dress. Also at the event: Mandy Patinkin ("Inigo Montoya"), Chris Sarandon ("Prince Humperdinck"), Wallace Shawn ("Vizzini"), Carol Kane ("Valerie"), Billy Crystal ("Miracle Max") and director Rob Reiner.Noticeably missing from the party were Christopher Guest and Fred Savage -- as well as Andre the Giant and Peter Falk, who have both passed away since the movie's release.Check out all the reunion pics in the gallery above. Hot off the presses! And given our wee Carol Kane tangent recently, we'll have fun storming this castle...
The director and cast of the adventure comedy classic The Princess Bride (1987), including Rob Reiner, Billy Crystal, Cary Elwes, Carol Kane, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon and Robin Wright, will reunite for a 25th anniversary special screening and Q & A at the 50th New York Film Festival on Tuesday October 2nd at 8:00 Pm! Tickets will undoubtedly go fast for this one.
Oscar Trivia: It's worth noting that the Academy's bias against "light" movies can often cast them in an unflattering light historically. The Princess Bride only enjoyed one nomination -- a Best Original Song nomination at that -- in its year. It didn't even get a screenplay nomination which seems to strain all belief in hindsight. 1987's Oscar favorites were far from an anti-populist crop (Two Best Picture nominees, the wondrous Moonstruck,...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Director Jason Reitman traveled across Los Angeles from the premiere of his new film Young Adult Thursday night to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to host the third of his Live Read series. Each show features a different cast of actors playing roles popularized in the featured movies: for his first event, he chose The Breakfast Club, with Jennifer Garner, Aaron Paul, and more in the leads. His second, the Billy Wilder classic The Apartment, starred Natalie Portman and Steve Carell. For The Princess Bride, Reitman brought together his largest cast yet - and the whole evening was pretty damn magical.
Paul Rudd read the part of Westley, and Mindy Kaling (Kelly from "The Office") played Buttercup. Rudd was fantastic, his natural charm a perfect fit with Westley's droll humor and witty retorts. Kaling was regal and composed as the princess, taking a cue from original Buttercup Robin Wright...

It wasn’t a major hit at the box office. It didn’t spawn any sequels or TV spin-offs. It didn’t have any huge stars — unless you count the seven-foot-plus wrestler André the Giant. And yet, surprisingly — you might even say inconceivably — since its release in 1987, director Rob Reiner’s wryly comic fairy tale The Princess Bride, a fable about true love featuring swashbuckling adventure, a six-fingered villain, and Rodents of Unusual Size, has gone on to become one of the most beloved films in recent Hollywood history. Millions of fans can quote their favorite lines by heart: “My name is Inigo Montoya.

Well, I'm done being sentimental for the week. Summer 2011 was awesome, but you know what's better? Fall 2011. Almost Fifty films are releasing this fall, and most of them look to be very, very promising. This is the time of the year when the excellent Oscar bait hits the screen, in addition to numerous action films attempting to capture the box office glory of Avatar or Titanic. Basically, there's something for everyone this fall. Whether you're a hardcore movie buff or just an occasional movie watcher, Fall 2011 is a fine time to be a filmgoer! Hell, even the usual dump month of September looks pretty damn awesome! So without further ado, here's Tmp's Fall 2011 Movie Guide for September!

To conclude our Enchanted 80s week, Louisa takes a fond look back at a fantasy classic, Rob Reiner’s magical The Princess Bride...
Having spent the week celebrating some of our favourite enchanted eighties kids' movies, we hope none of the others will be offended when we say we've saved the best for last.
Rob Reiner's 1987 The Princess Bride is one of the funniest, warmest and most enjoyable kids' fantasy pictures out there. Unlike some of the others of its era, it doesn't require an ounce of nostalgia-fuelled goodwill from its audience to get over the bumpy moments, because there just aren't any. Start to finish, it's sweet and smart and everything that can make you fall in love with storytelling on screen.
(By the way, if this opening has got anyone's 'fawning gush-fest' senses tingling, I'm afraid it only gets worse from here on in. If it's derision and bile you're after,...

Case 39
Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.
Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the...

Welcome to another Saturday serving of The Second Edition! The past week has seen so many new trailers released that it's a tough act trying to juggle them all.
As a result this week's back page is packed with all the new trailers that everyone's talking about, as well as further news updates on Videodrome and the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, check it all out below!
#01 - Videodrome remake announced
Remakes, I think, are the Marmite of cinema. You either love them, or you hate them. Videodrome could also be called the Marmite of thrillers.
The original Videodrome, directed by David Cronenberg, starred James Woods as sleazy lowlife cable TV operator Max Renn. Renn discovers a snuff broadcast called "Videodrome," but it is more than a TV show - it's an experiment that uses regular TV transmissions to permanently alter the viewer's perceptions by giving them brain damage.

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.
