More like Hit & Miss

Warning: Spoilers
Now & Later is an independent film written and directed by nobody I'm familiar with and stars two complete unknowns.

The good:

Shari Solanis as Angela, an illegal immigrant. All I really have to say is that this actress is absolutely gorgeous, both inside and out. It is quite unbelievable how charismatic she was in this. And not only that, she has one of the most breathtaking figures that I've ever seen from an actress on screen.

The bad:

Keller Wortham (credited as James Wortham) as Bill, a banker who is apparently on the run from the police. I will say that this guy could have been (more) interesting, if the actor playing him wasn't so deadpan. While watching this, I was fully convinced that this dude took acting lessons from Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800; hell, even he showed more emotions in those films. As the film went on, I kept waiting for the cops to finally walk up to and arrested; that would've been hilarious. Sadly though, that never did happen; or maybe that's what the viewer is lead to believe.

My verdict:

While not a good flick, I would really call this a bad one either. The true saving grace is the lead actress, as mentioned earlier. Lastly, there are few/many explicit sex scenes (between the two leads) which is enough for me to recommend.

Explicit
kosmasp6 September 2015
Explicit images (read nudity), but also penetration have made their way into mainstream movies (no pun intended). And while the term mainstream might feel like a stretch given to a low budget movie, this is not a single case of this thing happening. Low budget movies (or even higher budget movies like Nymphomaniac) do not hold back anymore. Caligula did that many decades ago, but back then it was more like a single case scenario (if you don't count some "horror" movies who had some explicit intercourse in them as well).

But back to this one, which is depicting a relationship and a financial situation that might make feel people uncomfortable (even more uncomfortable than two people having sex together, while everything is shown). There is drama between all the nudity and it does work on a basic level. The acting is a bit off, which might have given this a bit of a boost, but overall the story is decent, though annoying at times. If you rent/watch it for the obvious non-story related reasons, you might feel disappointed, don't blame the movie for it though - on the other hand don't expect this to be a superb drama

Presence is the only thing we have...
petkovalora27 October 2023
I liked the film very much. The whole story unfolds under the echo of the word "now". Now we live, love, die, fall and rise. Past is too far and future is hidden behind the dreams. It is such a relief when you realize that the only constant thing in life is the inconstancy. And there is no time enough for regrets and despair, no time for loosing yourself in the cave of greed for getting more and more. You should appreciate every single moment and never forget it is a gift.

The main actors managed to inspire all these thoughts. Same feelings inspired the music and some camera decisions. I liked the scene with the bird-kite. And about the sex scenes I find them erotic, not vulgar or rude.

Size does matter
wc1996-428-36610119 November 2012
The male lead in this film is a doctor in real life and apparently quite accomplished in a number of fields. What he is doing in this miserable piece of tripe is beyond me. This guy must really want to be an actor which would be great if he could only act which he cannot. He's tall, dark and handsome and sports quite a package which is shown in all its glory, yet you never really believe this guy because he cannot stop being a doctor. There's even a scene where he's in bed with another man as well as a woman and even then it's almost as though he's in an examining room. When he takes hold of the other fellow's appendage I fully expected him to pull out some medical instrument to deal with the matter, but he does not. Yet one has the distinct feeling that the slab of beef in his hand is simply there for examination and nothing else. The female lead in this film is almost beside the point, playing second fiddle to the doctor's package which gets most of the attention in the film.

SEX ALWAYS SELL.
andrewchristianjr7 February 2021
What can I say. Sex always sells. Good political touching. Straight up colossal waste of time. Sadly, any hardcore porno offers better acting and sex you might actually enjoy.

An ode to the empowered woman
BreinWatch28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Angela (Shari Solanis) embodies the qualities of a woman set free. She is self-sufficient intellectually, emotionally, sexually and financially. She picks the men she would like to have, in her life and otherwise, like the books she keeps on her shelf: Reich on psychology, a treatise on Chi power. A lover from Nicaragua who roams the world as a journalist. A wanted trader, seemingly the main protagonist (James Keller Northam's Bill) who decides to flee to Nicaragua, the country the violence of which she left for a better life as an illegal immigrant in LA where she works as a nurse.

Embodying that implausible archetype of female eros 'set free' to conform, in Phillippe Diaz's film, to the male fantasy of the strong woman who wants nothing more than lovingly dominate a man, expose him to his hidden desires to serve her needs and expose his weaknesses and fears, but ultimately offering him all the bells and whistles of no strings attached intimacy.

An abandoned menage a trois cannot rise to more than a faint premonition of what Gaspar Noé would achieve so masterfully in Love a few years later. But it stands as perhaps the best example of Now and Later's fascination with the normalisation of sexuality as a main staple of everyday life, which some critics have mistaken for an unfortunate slip into soft pornography.

The underlying motif, that of living in the moment versus blindly falling forward in strive, may be sailing very close to kitsch but there remains an unapologetic authenticity in Solanis's and Northam's acting that gives this film its unexpected sparkle and mystery. Diaz is far from the pinacle of achievement in breathing fresh life into the well worn common places of cinematic voyeurism and politico-critical subtext. Now and Later nevertheless stands as a valid citation of these clichés in ways that not many other films have dared to attempt in such disarming lack of pretence.

Powerful movie
chris-chasely30 December 2011
This movie is an amazing movie, depicting intense varied emotions. It encapsulates liberation and freedom along with spirituality which is so much the essence of humanity. I found the sex to be so much a natural part, yet which is so often regarded as 'unnatural'to show in our society. The movie really teaches one to get in touch with his own spirituality instead of the dogma we have created for ourselves. A really powerful and enchanting movie, added by the superb acting by Shari Solanis - an actor with unparell emotional appeal. All in all, a must watch movie with kudos to the director and producer and the rest of the cast as well. Definitely 10 points - more if possible.

Ignore the distractions, just relax & enjoy this beautiful film
kimdino-112 July 2016
I could analyze this film as a critique of the American Dream and a very good one it is.

I could also point out the mass of very good social commentary and analysis of modern Western ethics.

And I'm sure the prudes will be put off by the very intimate sex scenes while the pervy types will be distracted from the story by them. So I could implore you not to let this happen and, instead, just allow these scenes to draw you into a feeling of intimacy with the characters.

I could also go on about how much the two lead actors must have put into this to bring their characters to life so vividly.

But instead I'll just say "Enjoy what is a very beautiful film on several levels".

btw I reserve 10 points for really, REALLY excellent films that stand out well above others. Otherwise I would have given this 10.

Deserves watching and reflection
daliou5 July 2021
Comparing the movie to the critic reviews is like talking about another film: this very true and provocative cinematique angle is nearly a threat to todays society, just because it is honest enough. Unlike what is written in the other user reviews, I think that the explicit sex scenes are NOT the main reason why this film has been chopped up by the critics, but they eventuallly add up to all its superficially called "negative points". Briefly:

1. The sex scenes: it is true that a sexually repressed society will eventually turn out being violent and its people being miserable. The film underlines the oxymoron of how we are "taught" to hypocritically "hide" our need for sex and love, as if it is something bad and anethical, whereas in the end, if openly cultivated, leads to self-fulfilment, joy and mental balance. And reduces hatred and violence.

2. The social point of view: The two leads are surrounded by poverty, social discrimination and injustice in what we think is our "modern equal world". And their relationship is indeed determined by those differences, as they both serve as representatives of two opposite social classes, the upper-class banker and the illegal immigrant. Poverty IS a reality and people ARE being exploited to death for others to consume and win millions. And the film cares to remind us that even if the two protagonists don't exist in reality, there are many many people who are like them.

3. The "we are the heroes" part: now this is a turning point in the film. Sadly enough, politics ARE a way of expressing power and greediness, and some countries/ people are the unlucky victims. The main lead, as a former banker, a former "master of the universe", approaches the most painful part of the movie, the realisation that our political leads may not be so "saint" at all, that our country may have erred, that wars are being provoked just for the profit, that a poor country's future may be a toy in the hands of those who are in power (financially and politcally), that people die for others to get richer etc... All those are issues we are trying to forget or neglect or doubt, and this film makes us look straight up to them, or at least it tries.

Some would rather look straight up to the provocative sex scenes, there is, though, i think, a natural coherency between all the issues addressed by the film (the sex, the politics, the freedom, the social critic) that lead up to a compact, intimate and philosophical end result.

P. S. Give it a try and watch it, with honesty and open mindedness. As all authentically non-Hollywood approaches, the characters in this film are not the great heroes we have to admire and immitate. We merely learn from them. Besides, for instance, I don't see why the sexual theme in "Vicky, Chrsistina, Barcelona" should be more justifiable, less shocking or "intellectual" enough to win an oscar and get plenty of praising critic reviews.

A sexually repressed society will resort to violence
politfilm30 August 2019
At the very beginning we are welcomed with Wilhelm Reich's quote: "A sexually repressed society will resort to violence". He is an international trader - a speculator who grew up in a typical American family devoted to power and success. She is an illegal immigrant from Nicaragua, and works as a volunteer in a free clinic. When they meet it's a collision of worlds (quite literally) with plenty of sex and conversations about politics, philosophy, and other worldly pleasures. This movie very effectively raises its voice against the culture in which violence is considered to be top-notch entertainment, while sex is taboo and shame.

Good film
rodnywww14 October 2013
This is a very good film. I totally liked it. The plot is different; but one of the best I have every found.I specially liked the leading actress; not just because she is good looking; but because she is a talented actress. She does a great job to attract viewers to the film. The leading actor is also a talented person. He is totally justifying his character. This story is actually making us to think twice about our fast faced life. It influence us to explore the true meaning of life and living. Aren't we all chasing after a dream? Which sometimes making us nothing but zombies who don't have hearts. This film is one of the best I have ever watched. I recommend for anybody who has time to watch a film with patient.

Sex is something dark and hidden away
jromanbaker14 December 2020
I have seen this excellent film and wonder why it is hidden away like a monster in a cupboard. It deals partly with an explicit sexual relationship, and yes the lead actor shows his erect penis and the sex real. Both lead actors are not afraid of showing sexual excitement, and James Wortham who is almost dismissed by other reviewers for praise gives a performance that is very fine indeed, and it is ( I hazard a guess ) male reviewers who in the main would rather not see him in this excited state. If he was about to kill someone with an axe or a brutal instrument it would be alright, but no he is just unashamedly and often with great tenderness giving pleasure to another person. That audiences have been stunned by this is beyond my comprehension. Is his penis so shameful that it should be hidden away ? The female genitalia has often been seen on film, and I am thinking especially of the films of Walerian Borowcyck who was praised for such films as ' La Bete ' and considerred by some to be a great director. To make myself clear a woman can simulate sex but a man cannot. This is where the hypocrisy is focussed due to bad sex education and centuries of shame. Above all this film is well made, and the true revelation for me is how much parts of Los Angeles looks like a city from hell with its poor and underprivileged. Now that is something really be shocked about but instead it is the astonished look at the beauty of the sexual act, and especially that part of the male that is usually kept tightly locked up in the attic of our dirty minds.

I like this movie
jayalahindonesia5 September 2017
I think this is best movie I've ever watched from US NR categories. What makes me displease from this movie is that the actors are not played in other (great) movies especially the leading female actor. I've checked out her profile and see that she played only in 2 movies. What a sad career for a good talent. In Now & Later she played all dialogues and acts superbly, makes me real diving into the story and putting aside frontal nudity scenes. Like Avanti!, I put this movie in my special folder in my external HD drive where anybody won't fine Shakespeare in Love in it. Absolutely great!
