Matthew Ross‘ first foray into feature films received its world premiere debut at Sundance (read our review) in 2016, and he was quick to move from crime rom Frank & Lola into his sophomore project, which is described as a romantic-thriller and filmed in the frigid St Petersburg, Russia and Winnipeg, Canada.

For fans of all things Keanu Reeves, and indeed action movies in general, there is only one film releasing in February of any significance: John Wick: Chapter 2. Chad Stahelski’s imminent sequel has stolen headlines left, right and center over the past few weeks with a suitably fiery marketing spiel, as Reeves’ ice-cool hitman prepares for his sophomore outing. And though the John Wick universe is a rich one – rich enough to warrant a potential TV spinoff, it seems – Keanu Reeves isn’t about to limit himself to a single character.

Unsurprisingly, it involves a trip to the titular Russian province, with the script from Scott B. There are numerous surprises waiting in Frank & Lola, Matthew Ross’ lurid psycho-thriller, not least of which is the way the director utilizes his actors. Ross, a first-time feature filmmaker who arrives here confidently, casts the oft-menacing Michael Shannon, playing hot-shot Las Vegas chef Frank, as a smoldering romantic lead-cum-action man. Meanwhile, frequent manic pixie dream girl Imogen Poots, playing Frank’s girlfriend Lola, is positioned as a femme fatale. We expect one actor to bring the edge, and it turns out that where he has a warped everyman quality here, it’s she who adds the element of unpredictability.
Frank and Lola’s relationship begins charmingly enough. Recalling a time when American movies were more playful with their editing, the director cuts back and forth in the timeline of their courtship, encapsulating months in minutes during one delightful early sequence. Frank makes Lola a luxurious omelette and takes her on a drive round Vegas,...

Michael Shannon and Imogene Poots star in a dark, sexy tale about a twisted romance between aspiring fashion designer Lola and gifted chef Frank in Frank & Lola. Secrets and half-truths suffuse this noir-ish tale which is set, appropriately, partly in Las Vegas, a city of illusions that touts itself as a place of secrets, and partly in Paris, city of lights and love, of haute couture, haute cuisine, and heartbreak.
Opposites attract but this mix may just be too hot. From the first scene, which opens with the two in bed, the sexy, edgy Frank & Lola will bring Last Tango In Paris to mind for some audiences. It is clear from the very beginning that these two are a mismatch but they are both strongly draw together, each finding in the other...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Ridiculous coincidence drives the plot, but a reliance on outdated notions of gender expectations is what makes this neonoir such an infuriating experience. I’m “biast” (pro): love Michael Shannon and Imogen Poots
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Is she in pain? Or is she a lying, conniving bitch? Her state of mind only matters to the degree to which it makes a man have feels, so,you know, *blergh.* Frank & Lola, the first feature from writer-director Matthew Ross, makes it a matter of suspense just what the heck is going on with Lola (Imogen Poots: Green Room) when it comes to her relationship with Frank (Michael Shannon: Midnight Special): the movie never calls into question his violent jealousy, merely examines how justified he is in it. (Perhaps someone should have suggested to him that,...

I had no idea Frank & Lola existed until this morning, but after watching this trailer, I'm hooked. Michael Shannon has been one of the most compelling actors working in the industry for years now, and Imogen Poots is an up-and-coming talent who most recently left a nice impression in Green Room, so the idea of the two of them starring together in a psychosexual thriller is pretty exciting. Writer/director Matthew Ross has crafted a charged atmosphere here, and the trailer is cut in such a way that makes it appear as if anything could happen at any second. Count me in.
Frank & Lola debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and it arrives in theaters on December 9, 2016.
Set in Las Vegas and Paris, two of the world’s most glamorous cities, Frank & Lola is a psychosexual noir romance about love and sex, obsession and betrayal, revenge and redemption.

Michael Shannon ventures down a dark, meandering path in the tense first trailer for Frank & Lola.
Helmed by journalist-turned-director Matthew M. Ross, the striking, noir-esque drama finds the stoic actor in the role of Frank, an up-and-coming chef rising through the ranks of Las Vegas’ culinary scene. One evening, he meets Lola (Imogen Poots) a successful fashion designer, and the sparks begin to fly.
It’s a fiery, intense relationship, and the two spend some time revelling in the so-called Honeymoon Period. However, doubt begins to seep into Frank’s troubled mind after a man from Lola’s past stars making accusations against Poots’ high-flying designer. It effectively drives a wedge between the titular pair, and feelings of obsession, betrayal and even revenge begin to bubble to the surface – and fast.

"He played you. You got played." Paladin has released the official trailer for an indie drama titled Frank & Lola, a self-described "psychosexual noir romance about love and sex", set mostly in Las Vegas. Michael Shannon plays a top notch chef living in Las Vegas, who meets and hooks up with the fairly broken and troubled Lola, played by Imogen Poots. The two get mixed up in various sexual encounters while dealing with other personal problems in their own lives. I actually saw this at the Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered earlier this year, and it's fairly forgettable. The story is all over the place, it relies too much on the sex without much substance elsewhere, and the performances are fine but don't stand out in anyway. Also featuring Justin Long, Michael Nyqvist and Rosanna Arquette. If you're still curious, give it a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Matthew Ross' Frank & Lola,...

Michael Shannon stars in 10 (!) films this year, but only one is what we’ve all been waiting for from the actor: an erotic thriller. Matthew Ross‘ Frank & LolaFrank & Lola[/link], which premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, follows his character’s relationship with a fashion designer (Imogen Poots). As one can see in the first trailer, which debuted today ahead of a December release, their sexual games turn dark as more of the past is unveiled.
We said in our review, “Frank & Lola, a noirish erotic thriller from journalist-turned-director Matthew M. Ross, finds leads Michael Shannon and Imogen Poots in top form.
