THIS MAN DAWSON – Plague – 1960
This is episode 27 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.
A cargo freighter docks and an ambulance is called for. There is a sick man, Walter Burke, on board with an unknown illness. Also waiting on the dock are two criminal types, Nick Pawl and Than Wyenn. They are there to meet a former member of a their hold-up gang. The pair watch as the person they are waiting for, Burke, is carried off by the medics.
The pair, pull guns and grab up Burke and drive off with the ambulance. The reason for the grab is that Burke is the only one who knows where the robbery score is. The incident is called into the Police who are not quite sure what to make of it. That is till, another member of the ship's crew drops. The ship, just in from the Orient, has also brought a case the bubonic plague with it.
The Police now jump into action to track down the stolen ambulance and its passengers. The sick man, Burke, was displaying all the symptoms of the illness. A city wide alert goes out to all Police and medical types.
While all this is going on, Pawl and Wyenn have went to ground in an old warehouse. They try to question Burke about the cache of stolen loot but get nowhere. Burke is burning up with a fever. The two get the bright idea to call in a doctor. They find one silly enough to make a late night call to a warehouse.
The female doctor, Fintan Meyler, quickly spots the problem and tells the two thugs they all need to seek immediate medical help. The two not so swift in the head crooks, don't believe Meyler. They wave their guns in her face and tell her to fix Burke up.
When Meyler, does not show up home that night her husband calls in the Police. Led by, Chief Keith Andes, they track down the warehouse location from the message on Meyler's phone service. The crooks are soon collared and put under lock and key at the isolation ward at the city jail. Doc Meyler is likewise isolated, but at much better spot, the hospital.
William Conrad, the director, makes excellent use of several outdoor locations in the L.A. area to pass as the unnamed city of the series. The d of p, Monroe Askins, worked on over 300 different television episodes during his time in Hollywood.
