THIS MAN DAWSON –Accessory to Murder – 1960

This is episode 24 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.

Paul Fix is a mobbed up thug in charge of a string of small time bookies. He calls his lawyer, Leo Penn, to come over to his place. Penn soon arrives as Fix is having a "talk" with one of his bookie employees. The man has been dipping his hands in the mob take on the horses.

Penn tells Fix that as a lawyer, he cannot be here, if criminal activity is being discussed. Fix pulls a revolver and shoots the bookie dead. He then tosses the gun to Penn who foolishly catches it. Fix takes back the gun, which now has Penn's prints on it. "Just some insurance to keep you on my team" Fix says.

The local Police soon pull in Fix for a talk after the bookie's body is found. The Police know that the dead man worked for Fix. Fix's lawyer, Penn, shows and quickly gets Fix released on a lack of evidence. Penn is playing ball with Fix because he is frightened of being charged himself. He confides to his girl, Joi Lansing, about being set up. She wants him to go talk to the Police. Penn figures doing that will get them both killed.

Lansing however decides to talk with Police Chief Keith Andes about the matter. Andes, has Fix and one of his henchmen arrested. Penn again gets the mob types out on bail. Penn is now grabbed up as a material witness on the killing.

This needless to say spooks mob boss Fix into acting. He puts a beating on Miss Lansing to find out what is happening. Andes and his boys are watching and again put the pinch on Fix. After seeing the beating his girl, Lansing took, Penn decides to come clean and help the Police. Fix is soon up on murder charges over the bookie killing. He is convicted and given a date with the chair.

Actor Leo Penn switched to directing as acting bits dried up. He helmed several hundred television episodes between 1963 and 1995. He was also the father of actors, Chris and Sean Penn.

Miss Lansing was a popular pin-up girl who appeared as the blonde bimbo type is all sorts of films and TV episodes. Her physical assets being rather attention grabbing.
