Exclusive: Following a bidding war, TriStar Pictures has beaten out a number of suitors and pre-emptively acquired rights to Alison Espach’s forthcoming novel The Wedding People. Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who have a first-look deal with Sony Pictures, are set to direct, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicole Holofcener writing.
“It’s rare to read something that feels like real life, in all the best ways. .. funny, painful, cathartic and lasting. A throwback to the movies we grew up on with a modern sensibility. This is a story we can’t wait to tell,” said Speck and Gordon.
Speck, Gordon and Eric Fineman will produce through their company Speck + Gordon Inc. alongside Jonathan King and Ash Sarohia for Concordia Studio. Shary Shirazi and Kelseigh Coombs are overseeing the project for TriStar.

The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

Exclusive: Netflix has landed the comedy The Chaperone, to be directed and produced by Will Speck and Josh Gordon as a potential star vehicle for Jason Bateman.
Pic will be produced by Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films, with Af’s Amanda Anka also producing. Gordon & Speck will also produce through their Speck Gordon Inc. banner.
Cocaine Bear’s Jimmy Warden will write the screenplay, and they are keeping plot specifics under wraps.
This marks the third collaboration between Bateman and Speck & Gordon, after they teamed on The Switch and Office Christmas Party.
Aggregate’s Drew Brennan and Speck Gordon’s Eric Fineman will shepherd the pic.
Bateman most recently co-starred in the Ben Affleck-directed Air, and Aggregate produced the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which became the big acquisition of the Toronto Film Festival when Netflix acquired it in a $20 million deal.
Bateman and Speck & Gordon are repped by CAA.

Things didn’t go to plan when Matthew McConaughey was a surprise guest on a previous episode of the “Smartless” podcast.
Hosts Will Arnett and Sean Hayes recalled the time their cohost Jason Bateman had a “full meltdown” amid technical difficulties on the show. He ended up leaving the recording, TooFab reported.
“I slammed my laptop shut, took my ball, and went home like a b***h.”
Bateman insisted on a new episode of the podcast, during which they played audio of his tailspin, “Oh no. Please don’t have playback.”

Anyone who knows beloved crime novelist Elmore Leonard only through Justified, the 2010 TV adaptation of his work, might be confused as to why its reboot, Justified: City Primeval, moves the action from the hollers of Harlan County, Kentucky to the rust belt of Detroit, Michigan.
That confusion is understandable as Justified enjoys one of the most richly-realized settings in modern television history. Despite filming nearly the entirety of its six-season run in Southern California (the pilot was shot in Pittsburgh), FX‘s saga about an anachronistic stetson-wearing lawman was absolutely steeped in Appalachian realness. Indeed, the entire premise of the show revolved around Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) being forced to relocate back to his troubled Kentucky hometown following a questionably “justified” shooting of a crime lord in Miami.
Justified quite simply does not work without its Harlan County setting. The weight of history bears down on...

I love Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’ve seen every movie he’s done. Read his book. Follow his newsletter (which I totally recommend if you’re looking for a bit of healthy positivity in your day). Can spell his last name without Googling it. I grew up looking up to him as a father figure and still do to this day. He’s one of those special people you can look to for positivity and motivation when you’re feeling down. An actual positive male role model who just wants you to eat right, lift weights, and be kind. Oh, and he hosted and directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt once and owns a miniature horse named Whiskey that he lets live in the house with him.
What’S Not To Love?!
As you can tell, I am very excited to go through Arnold’s brief but legendary career...

The role of retired CIA operative Luke Brunner in Netflix’s Fubar is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “first TV role ever” in the same way that this is my first McVitie’s Milk Chocolate Hobnob of the day – it absolutely isn’t but if it makes us all happier to lie to ourselves then why not?
Early press for action-comedy series Fubar has made much of the coup of Netflix bagging Schwarzenegger for television. At last! The Governator is “set to make his TV series debut” says The Hollywood Reporter. This marks the action icon’s “first ever television series”, says Collider. Science has finally figured out how to make TV screens wide enough to accommodate the Hollywood star’s mighty girth, and now we’ve got him. Never mind that Arnie’s been muscling around on television since 1974.

Body/Head, Kim Gordon’s duo with experimental guitarist Bill Nace, have surprise-released a new EP titled Come On. Stream it below via Bandcamp.
According to the EP’s description, the Sonic Youth co-founder and Nace “assembled” Come On from “a combination of old and new parts.” The 4-track project layers the latter’s droning guitars with Gordon’s lurching bass as her eerie vocals cut through the mix. Pick up a digital copy here. The limited edition vinyl is sold out for now, but check Open Mouth Records’ Bandcamp page for new stock coming soon.
Come On follows 2021’s Body/Dilloway/Head, Gordon and Nace’s team-up with former Wolf Eyes member Aaron Dilloway. Body/Head’s last album was 2018’s The Switch.

Jason Bateman is a versatile star who has appeared in such high-profile movies as Hancock, The Switch, and Horrible Bosses. His status in Hollywood rose even higher after his work in hit series like Arrested Development and Ozark. Bateman is no flash in the pan and has been hard at work in Hollywood for decades. In fact, his career started when he was just 10 years old after he was cast in a series of TV commercials before landing his breakout role in the beloved series Little House on the Prairie, becoming a bonafide child star.
Soon, Bateman was focusing so hard on his acting career that he had little time for anything else — even admitting in an interview with his Horrible Bosses co-star Jennifer Aniston that he didn’t graduate high school because of his work.

"Jackie Brown" remains Quentin Tarantino's only departure from writing and directing his own films and, as such, it continues to stand just outside of the explosive, hyper-real universe he's created with all of his other features. Adapted from Elmore Leonard's 1992 novel "Rum Punch," Tarantino's follow-up after the unprecedented success of "Pulp Fiction" was intentionally crafted to fly right under the radar of the mainstream. The chances of duplicating the cultural phenomenon of "Pulp" just wasn't a possibility and whatever Tarantino was going to do next would be unfairly compared to what many still consider his masterpiece.
Until "Jackie Brown," Tarantino had essentially created his own cinematic universe (the Qtcu?) populated by characters dreamt up by his own imagination. "Reservoir Dogs," "Pulp Fiction," "True Romance," and "Natural Born Killers" all have the same voice that remained intact even when other directors such as Tony Scott and Oliver Stone inserted their own established,...

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

It’s last call for a number of excellent Comedy Central series as well as a handful of genuinely great films on HBO Max this month.
On Oct. 31, the Comedy Central shows “Key and Peele,” “Nathan for You,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Reno 911!” and “Chappelle’s Show” (the first two seasons) will depart HBO Max, likely heading to Paramount+ at some point in November.
Also leaving HBO Max this month is the Halsey music film “If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power,” as well as the surprisingly great horror prequel “Annabelle: Creation.” Other noteworthy depatures include “Capote,” “High Fidelity,” “Jerry Maguire,” “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” the 1994 version of “Little Women” and the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies.

“Saturday Night Live” saw another hosting debut this weekend, this time in the form of a celebrity who could possibly even be called the complete opposite of last week’s host, Owen Wilson: Kim Kardashian West. The influencer/reality TV star/mogul took the stage at Studio 8H for the first time ever on Saturday night, poking fun at herself and her family in the process.
Host: Kim Kardashian West
In terms of the proverbial 2021 “bingo card,” surely no one had “Kim Kardashian kills it during her ‘SNL’ monologue” on theirs. But that is exactly what she did in her four-and-a-half-minute monologue, as she cracked jokes about her life and persona. She even told a pretty good O.J. Simpson joke in the process. In fact, the monologue version of the Simpson joke worked far better than when the episode physically manifested it in the “The People’s Kourt” sketch.

Early on in HBO Max’s long-awaited Friends reunion special “The One Where They Get Back Together,” series co-creator David Crane reveals the producing team’s initial vision for the show.
“We were really intrigued with the idea of doing a true ensemble. It’s not like there’s a lead and they have friends. No, it’s just about the friends. We’re following all of their stories equally.”
Friends would never have worked if Crane, Marta Kauffman, and Kevin Bright hadn’t gone six for six in the casting of the titular friends. One or two solid choices wouldn’t do it. Neither would four or five. It had to be all six.

Quentin Tarantino loves movies. He says he won’t be making them soon, but that doesn’t diminish his appreciation for the art of motion pictures. The Pulp Fiction director signed a two-book deal with Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, to do a deep dive into what he loves most about Hollywood, according to Deadline: 1960s and ‘70s cinema. Tarantino will write a Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood novelization and give an overview of his favorite period in film with Cinema Speculation.
Tarantino also loves books. He got grounded for shoplifting Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch when he was 15, according to Quentin Tarantino: The Pocket Essential Guide (2004) by D.K. Holm. Leonard’s influence is all over Tarantino’s works, and the filmmaker is paying it forward. “In the ’70s, movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading,” Tarantino said in a statement via Deadline.

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman have been in each other’s orbit for the better part of three decades, and have also worked together on films including “The Break-Up,” “The Switch” and “Horrible Bosses” franchise.
Both started in the business very young yet proved to have the ability not only to maintain longevity as performers and to deftly flip between comedic and dramatic roles, but they also both took greater control of their careers by slipping behind the camera as producers and directors.
Now, the duo finds themselves Emmy-nominated at the same time: She with her first dramatic Television Academy nod for her work on Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show” and he with his third consecutive lead drama actor nom for Netflix’s “Ozark,” in addition to a guest performance nomination for HBO’s “The Outsider.”

August will be a quiet month on Prime Video UK leading up to the arrival of The Boys season 2 in the first week of September, but there are still a few things to look forward to before Billy Butcher and co. get back to ridding the world of megalomaniacal superheroes and their enablers.
Towards the end of August on Prime, Stargirl will be streaming for UK viewers. The DC Universe show has received strong reviews and will be back for a second season eventually. If you’re already a fan of DC’s Doom Patrol, it will make for a sweeter and more teen-friendly companion show.

Not every take on viewing experience in the time of quarantine has to touch on the theme of confinement, “The Virgin Suicides” certainly feels attuned to this moment, even though it was released 20 years ago this month. Sofia Coppola’s feature debut is both a film about confinement and a sterling rebuke of creative restrictions of all shapes. It’s the first — and so far only — film adaptation of one of the author’s books, which is only further proof of how hard it can be to translate his tricky, intimate tone to the big screen.

Former presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren might have dropped out of the race, but she's taking it all in stride. On March 7, the Massachusetts senator made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live and met her doppelgänger, Kate McKinnon. The on-air union was sweet enough, but what happened behind the scenes was even better.
Elizabeth and Kate took on TikTok's "Flip the Switch" challenge. It involves standing in front of a mirror with someone while playing Drake's 2018 song "Nonstop." As soon as the lyric "I just flipped the switch" comes in, someone flicks a light off and back on, revealing that the participants have swapped positions and personas with each other. With no drummer and two songs...
