With the 4th of July taking place on Monday, Universal is using the holiday weekend and the fact that school are out across the country to release the latest installment of its most popular animated franchise. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is a prequel to the “Despicable Me” movies but also a sequel to 2015’s hit prequel “Minions,” which showed how the lovable evil henchmen came into being. “Rise of Gru” shows the early days of the Minions working with the villainous Gru as a child, once again voiced by Steve Carell. Read on for our box office preview.
Gru was introduced all the way back in 2010 in “Despicable Me,” one of the early collaborations between Universal and animation house Illumination Entertainment. It opened with 56.4 million in the weekend following 4th of July, and it went on to gross 251.5 million domestically and made about that same amount overseas. Three years later,...

Last Year’s Winner: “Rick and Morty”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The Best Animated Program category hasn’t seen a repeat winner since the category was divided into “One Hour or Less” and “More Than One Hour” divisions, and “South Park” took home the latter prize in 2008 (for its “Imaginationland” episodes) and the former in 2009 (for “Margaritaville”). That being said, “Rick and Morty” has won both times it was nominated (in 2018 and 2020), so one could argue it’s a dominant force whenever it’s eligible.
Fun Fact: “The Simpsons” and “South Park” are the only two programs to win more than two trophies in this category. The iconic Fox series has 11 wins (most recently in 2019) while Comedy Central’s landmark program has five wins (with the last coming in 2013). With one more win, still-active shows like “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” could become the third to join these elite ranks.

On Friday afternoon at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, Nickelodeon gave the most detailed preview yet for the network’s second “Spongebob” spinoff, “The Patrick Star Show,” and looked back at 20 years of the global hit franchise. Announced earlier this week, “The Patrick Star Show” will debut Friday, July 9 at 7 Pm Et/Pt, followed by the premiere of Nickelodeon’s first animated original series in five years, “Middlemost Post.”
As was the case with its predecessor, nailing down exactly what kind of program the “Patrick Star Show” is can be tough. According to the show’s logline, it “follows a younger Patrick Star living at home with his family, where he hosts his own variety show for the neighborhood from his television-turned-bedroom.”
“It’s a family sitcom mixed with a variety show, at times a talk show and at others the characters are just on the road having adventures away from the house,...

Netflix has announced that they will be producing a Fast & Furious animated series that will be developed by DreamWorks Animation Television. Out of all of the animated series that could have been announced, I wasn't expecting this!
The series will center around Tony Toretto, and he will follow "in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination."
It sounds like it could be fun. Netflix has actually put out some decent animated content, so I'll be hoping for the best. The series will be produced by Tim Hedrick, who wrote for DreamWorks’ Voltron: Legendary Defender series, and Bret Haaland, who has produced DreamWorks’ animated shows like All Hail King Julien and The Penguins of Madagascar. They will also both serve as showrunners.

What happens when two children’s entertainment scribes (boasting credits such as The Tigger Movie, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Peter Rabbit, and Kim Possible) collaborate on their first feature film? Obviously you get a kid friendly movie titled Blood Punch, filled with death, guts, murder, betrayal – wait, what? You heard right. Director Madellaine Paxson and writer Eddie Guzelian are ditching all that warm and fuzzy bullshit to bring you their own twisted fairy tale about three rowdy criminals forced to repeat the same deadly day over and over again. It’s like kind of like Groundhog Day – a vile, wicked, royally f#cked up Groundhog Day your mum certainly wouldn’t approve of.
It all starts when Milton (Milo Cawthorne), a shy chemistry wiz, meets Skyler (Olivia Tennet), a criminal looking for the best meth cook she can find. After meeting in Milton’s rehab clinic (where else would you find the best junkies?...

The narrative of recent months: DreamWorks Animation, which has gone through restructuring, has been hemorrhaging money. They posted a $247.7 million loss for Q4 2014 and generally things have been looking dismal. But one has to wonder who is mismanaging the company. They have the “Shrek” series which is the highest grossing animated franchise of all time ($3.5 billion and counting presuming they’ll make more spin-offs), the “Madagascar” series ($2.2 billion), and “How To Train Your Dragon” ($1.1 billion). They’ve just had too many pricey flops in the interim, “The Penguins Of Madagascar” being one of them. But with the modest success of “Home” and a third “Kung Fu Panda” film on the way, they’re hoping to turn their ship around. Here’s the official synopsis for “Kung Fu Panda 3”: When Po’s long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters.

DreamWorks Animation, as a company, is poised at a precarious juncture. The animation studio, founded by former Disney exec Jeffrey Katzenberg and, at one point, a genuine challenger to their throne, has been crippled by a string of financial disappointments which have led to a dramatic corporate restructuring, consolidation of efforts. There is talk that, if things continue like they have, insolvency by 2019 will ensue. Last year Dwa released three movies. This year, they're releasing one – "Home." This was a film that was supposed to open last fall, but at the last minute Katzenberg swapped its release with "The Penguins of Madagascar," hungry for a fourth quarter smash. That didn't happen and now, justly or not, "Home" carries the weight of an entire studio on its back. But if DreamWorks Animation is hoping to get back on track with this movie, a lavish sci-fi comedy based on a recent children's book,...

Back in 2013, the release of Dreamworks Animation's Rise Of The Guardians was met with a thud and a crack in its opening weekend. While the film wound up managing to make a decent gross, compared to its budget at least, it wound up being the beginning of a dangerous spiral for Dwa's profit margin. As time went on and films like Mr. Peabody And Sherman continued to make profits, yet still lead to write downs, it looked like the studio couldn't do anything to bring itself back from the edge. Looking at the real numbers of the situation, it's not a pretty picture for the studio that gave birth to Shrek. And the final quarter of last year was particularly rough. Variety has issued a report detailing the big hit that the studio took after their last film, The Penguins Of Madagascar, and the number is a very uncool...

The cinematographic industry presented some good numbers this month. It is estimated that more than 22 million people went to the cinemas. Sales reach $161 million dollars. Korean Films were watched by 14 million people, had a revenue of $100 million dollars and were able to get 62.43% of the total market. On the other hand Foreign Films grab the 37.38% of the market, were able to sell 8.4 million tickets rising $60 million dollars.

Following a number of high-profile failures in recent years, DreamWorks Animation has announced plans for a massive restructuring of its core business. The overall reduction will result in a loss of approximately 500 jobs across all locations and all divisions of the studio.
Dwa intends to drop its feature production output down from three films per year to two. On top of that, the plan is to stick to one original film and one sequel each year starting next year, and each of the films will tighten their budgets with costs to be reduced to $120 million per film starting with "Trolls" late next year.
Their release slate has been switched around and the next four years will be as follows:
March 27th 2015: "Home"
March 17th 2016: "Kung Fu Panda 3"
November 4th 2016: "Trolls"
January 13th 2017: "Boss Baby"
December 22nd 2017: "The Croods 2"
February 16th 2018: "Larrikins"

Final Update, Monday 4:49 Pm Pt: Across the Top 10 major studio releases internationally there’s reason for some holiday cheer. This weekend’s figures are up 19.4% over last frame with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies leading the pack at $89M, plus strong perfs from Exodus: Gods And Kings in new key markets and the Night At The Museum finale. Still, that result is down from last year, largely due to the impact that Frozen was having on the season with a $50.5M take in the comparable frame. Five Armies in the estimates is also about 9.3% off from Smaug’s performance last year, but there are those nasty currency fluctuations to take into account.
Still, it a big weekend for local titles. Last frame’s Indian release Pk added Bollywood flair to the international box office with an offshore haul of $14.3M for a global cume of $61.46M.

Manuel here offering up the sequel to last week’s Battle of the Holiday Releases you didn’t know you needed. Those Middle Earth dwellers are nothing if not resilient warriors and thus it comes as no surprise that The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies held on to #1 for the second week in a row despite some competition from a singing witch and a martyred soldier, both proving quite the challengers. That bodes well for the awards prospects for Rob Marshall’s big screen adaptation of Into the Woods and Angelina Jolie’s uplifting war drama Unbroken. Box office alone does not win awards (or nominations) but it surely doesn’t hurt. It was a busy Christmas week -- even embattled and corporate freedom of speech poster boy The Interview made a dent in a little over 300 screens.

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:15 Pm: The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies dropped some gold coins on its way to the bank today to deposit its actual results. The finale of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy was off 1.7% from its Sunday five-day estimate of $90.6M, for a current reported cume of $89.1M. That figure still beats the first five days of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ($86.1M).
The Warner Bros./New Line/MGM film wasn’t the only one off from its Sunday: Sony’s Annie came in about $440K under today with $15.86M in third, while Fox’s Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb was down $200K.
Essentially, yesterday wound up not being as robust as expected for distribs with it being the last Sunday before Christmas. Warner Bros. projected $18.2M yesterday for Five Armies, but filed $16.73M, while Sony estimated $4.9M but came in closer to $4.5M.

Manuel here reporting for box office duty. While news about the Sony hack dominated headlines, the domestic box office was slowly showing signs of life after a rather muted start to december (Exodus: Gods and Kings anyone?). Thankfully (for studios, critics would clearly disagree) the crop of new films offered some needed entertainment and seem poised to offer some successes as the holidays approach this coming week.

It has been plagued with mixed reviews and it turns out “Exodus: Gods and Kings” had enough momentum to score the #1 spot at the box office this weekend.

Looking for a handy guide to 2015's biggest animated movies, from Shaun The Sheep to Minions and Peanuts? Then step this way...
There have been far better years for family entertainment, and for animated films, than 2014. Whilst there have been highlights - Paddington, The Wind Rises, How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Boxtrolls - the mix of material on offer hasn't particularly sparkled.

A second DreamWorks Animation movie has been shifted from its 2015 release date, as Kung Fu Panda 3 moves away from The Force Awakens.
DreamWorks Animation's schedule has been a little bit erratic over the past year or two, as the firm has switched dates, delayed films, and in at least one case - Me & My Shadow - dropped a film from its announced line-up altogether.
The studio had planned a couple of years' back to release up to three films a year, but since it revealed that, 2014 is the only year it's done so. Even then, it involved a switcheroo between Home and The Penguins Of Madagascar.
It's 2015 slate originally had three films on it. Home is the next one, having been moved to March 2015. But it also had B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherwordly Operations in there. That, however, has now been delayed, with no new release date given.

If you’re at all into this Game of Thrones thing, you might’ve heard rumblings of a Game of Thrones video game released this week. That, in itself, is nothing surprising. Only the peak of game franchises are rewarded with their own movies (and even then, those movies are almost exclusively crushing disappointments). On the other side of the curtain though, it seems like every movie from Mean Girls to The Penguins of Madagascar is given a cheap tie-in game that’ll just end up in a landfill somewhere. But Game of Thrones (or, to use its full, regal title, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, Episode 1: “Iron From Ice”) is, in fact, not crappy. It’s actually pretty great — not entirely a surprise, considering that Telltale Games was responsible for a previous The Walking Dead game that blew the doors off both the comic and the TV series of the same name. The long Thanksgiving weekend brought in some nice numbers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay once again leaving newcomer Horrible Bosses 2 well below expectations. Mockingjay brought in an estimated $56.8 million for the three-day weekend and brought its domestic total over $225 million. That left little to no attention for the weekend’s new releases of The Penguins of Madagascar which came in second with an estimated $25.8 million and as mentioned, Horrible Bosses 2 opened in fifth place with $15.7 million.
