'Shane' And 'Messer' Make It Memorable
ccthemovieman-116 October 2007
At first I thought, "What's the big deal?" Usually, the opener is a bit shocking, but this nothing seemed out of the ordinary.....until the criminal they just caught was one of the CSI guys: "Sheldon Hawkes" (Hill Harper). Well, you know they've got the wrong guy. He just happened to be wearing the same green hood the "perp" was wearing, was the same skin color and had a big wad of cash on him. How is Sheldon going to get out of this mess, with his crew's help, of course, remains to be seen. Somebody set him up, big-time.

The cool part of that story is that the man who did this was just in an episode a few weeks ago and escaped out of custody. It's our buddy "Shane Casey," played by that "Termintor 2" punk kid, Edward Furlong (who is now 30 years of age.)

A secondary story involves a murder at a porno shop on 42nd Street called "Peepin' Tom's." It's okay, but the other story totally dominates to the point where this one is superfluous, although the two stories connect. One note: the captain in this episode is an idiot and the type of guy Hollywood likes to show in that position, someone that would not see in real life. Thankfully, we only have two short scenes with him.

The ending was excellent, very suspenseful and featured excellent acting by Furlong and Camine Giiovinazzo ("Danny Messer"). It helped make this an excellent episode, start-to-finish.

Usual steady work marred by preposterous scenario

Warning: Spoilers
Hawkes is set up by the standard "infinitely resourceful despite having escaped police custody with nothing but his clothes" criminal mastermind. The silver lining is that Ed Furlong played the character very well.

Hawkes is caught minutes after a robbery/murder while out for his morning jog; he is subsequently identified as the shooter by the surviving witness.

What makes this preposterous is that a medical examiner turned crime scene investigator is alleged to have stuck up the bar he jogs by every morning, that he has even been to more than once, and unnecessarily shoots the bartender while leaving a witness who easily identifies him- all for a couple hundred bucks. The would have to feel he is knucklehead of the year to commit that crime.

Heck, when he is stopped, Hawkes would automatically tell the cops "hey, I'm with CSI," etc. Doubtless he'd have been sent on his way. At worst, a quick check of the bank records of a guy with a nice career would dispel any misgivings. Even if, EVEN IF he'd been financially strapped, wouldn't they figure a doctor could make easy money selling scripts, rather than a thrill-seeker bar holdup, followed by a nice jog in the same clothing and with the money in his pocket?

Good cast, good production, mild letdown.

everything was wrong.

Warning: Spoilers
Starting with bringing Sheldon to the only eyewitness (who even just said, black guy in a green hoodie) straight from a police car in handcuffs, wearing the same clothes, asking "is this the guy?" Is that how eyewitnesses identify suspects now? How about arraigning Sheldon and putting him straight in Rikers (no bond) before any kind of investigation could happen? How about banning the crime lab from investigating? In an earlier episode, Danny Masser actually shoots and kills an undercover police officer in front of an entire subway platform full of witnesses, difference here, Danny was never arraigned for any crime, Danny was never put in Rikers, and the entire crime lab was all over the scene and the evidence. What were these writers thinking? I get drama for ratings, but this was just plain stupid.
