The best moments of Merchant Ivory––a documentary directed by Stephen Soucy concerning the legendary production company––feel like their most-successful pictures: restrained and revealing at the same time. Mostly told chronologically and split into chapters with talking heads to drive the narrative, the film dutifully recounts the agony and ecstasy of Merchant Ivory Productions. Sections are devoted to producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory, writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and composer Richard Robbins. Dedicated crew members and stars sing their praises while softly criticizing their methods of madness, most of the latter directed at Merchant. Highlights include recollections of Merchant’s culling together funds for each production, often starting a film before all the money was put together. Or Jhabvala’s brutal judgment: Ivory recalls her dislike of Maurice from pre-production onward, all because the novel wasn’t, in her opinion, up to snuff. Somewhat ironically, Maurice is perhaps the...

Oscar-winning screenwriter and novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala has died at age 85, the Associated Press reports. Her daughter, Firoza Jhabvala, confirms her death in New York, after a long illness.
Jhabvala's writing career began with a series of novels about her life in India. She was later approached by Merchant Ivory Productions to turn one of the novels into a movie. "The Householder" was released in 1963. She went on to write 22 films total for the production company, winning two Academy Awards.
Her Oscars were a result of adapting E.M. Forster novels "Howards End" and "A Room With a View." She received a third nomination for her adaptation of "The Remains of the Day" in 1993. Her last screenplay was for 2008's "The City of Your Final Destination," starring Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney.

Kirsten Dunst is a bride who's seen happier times in Melancholia.
In his 2011 science-fiction-tinged drama Melancholia, Danish bad boy filmmaker Lars von Trier (Antichrist) takes on nothing less than love, death, family, relationships, expectations, tradition, depression and, oh yes, the destruction of our planet.
And he does all that to critical acclaim, a solid box-office response and award recognition at the Cannes Film Festival! Not bad…
The story of Melancholia centers on the wedding celebration of newly married couple Justine (Kirsten Dunst, All Good Things) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård, TV’s True Blood), taking place at the house of the bride’s sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg, The City of Your Final Destination) and brother-in-law John (Keifer Sutherland, TV’s 24). Sir Anthony Hopkins needs no introduction as an actor. Even if he seems to be recycling the same performance lately, he stands as a giant among his peers, Richard Burton incarnate with less late career turkeys (so far). Lesser known is that he has also been dabbling in music, playing piano and composing. Thus far he's composed three scores, all for films he also directed.
Hopkins will be presenting these compositions at concerts for the first time this summer in the UK, THR reports. The music will be performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and will include compositions Hopkins wrote for the films "August" and "Slipstream."
Hopkins' most recent foray into music for film was a piece he wrote and performed called "Venetian Medley" for 2010's "The City of Your Final Destination," which had a marvelous score by guitarist/composer Jorge Drexler.

The Rite
Directed by: Mikael Hafstrom
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donghue, Alice Braga
Rating: Nr
Release Date: January 8, 2011
Trailer Score: 3/10
My Thoughts: Is it possible to be a waste of my life if it only clocks in a little over two minutes? Either way The Rite can’t seem to do anything right in this trailer. If this were a teaser trailer, it might be forgivable, but I don’t think that’s the case. It’s torn between two problems. On one hand, it seems to be saying too much. It literally takes half of the trailer before any discernible plot is seen. We get it, demons are bad and the Vatican is scared of them but doesn’t want people to know they’re scared. That sentiment made three or four appearances by the end of the trailer and I’ve just got to say, it’s not a terribly complex idea.

Potential Films invites you to The City of Your Final Destination.
Based on the novel by Peter Cameron, James Ivory’s The City of Your Final Destination stars Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
28-year-old Kansas University doctoral student Omar Razaghi has been awarded a grant to write the biography of Latin American writer Jules Gund. When Gund’s estate unexpectedly denies Omar authorisation, Omar is urged by his girlfriend to travel to Uruguay and petition the executor to change their minds.
The Gund “family,” living together on the author’s isolated and decaying estate, includes Gund’s widow, his mistress, her young daughter, Gund’s brother, and his partner. Omar’s unannounced arrival upsets their fragile co-existence and causes all to question their own circumstances, which in turn leads Omar himself to question to what degree, if any; he has been the author of his own existence up until now.

If I were to judge The City of Your Final Destination only by its credits, it would receive top marks. Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney are two of the best actors still on this planet, and director James Ivory is no stranger to cinematic glory. Unfortunately, I watched this film, so the scores are significantly lower than I had imagined.
The basic premise is interesting enough, I suppose. Omar (played by Omar Metwally) is a grad student who desperately wants to write a biography about Jules Gund, a legendary author, and is denied permission in this adaptation of Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name. Omar travels to Ocho Rios, a secluded area in Uruguay, to meet with Gund’s family, including his widow (Laura Linney), brother Adam (Anthony Hopkins) and mistress (Charlotte Gainsbourg), in hopes of convincing them to reconsider. The family is hesitant to let Omar into their house and lives,...

The Last Song: "What does this have to do with The Last Song? Only this: Miley Cyrus is one of those socioeconomically pretty people. She thinks she's pretty; she thinks she's talented; and she thinks it so much, and with so much arrogance, that she's convinced millions of others that she is those things. Do I feel terrible for saying that? Yes. But it's true. And the world is eventually going to chip away at her confidence and expose her for what she is. Chicago – It’s unlikely that there will be a more A-list cast in a more frustrating film this entire year than on display in “The City of Your Final Destination.” Not only does it include a reunion of the great director James Ivory with star Anthony Hopkins (who appeared in the director’s “Howards End” and “Remains of the Day”) but it features two of my favorite actresses alive, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laura Linney. And yet, the only word I can think of to describe the film is “disappointing.”

Film company in wrangle over money as latest feature, The City of Your Final Destination, opens to mixed reviews
Once upon a time, Merchant Ivory was renowned for its hugely successful and elegantly understated studies of hearts breaking slowly and silently beneath layers of repression and period tailoring.
But five years after the death of its producer, Ismail Merchant, the firm is facing two unseemly lawsuits that have more in common with John Grisham than Em Forster, while its latest film has opened to lukewarm reviews after a financially fraught production.
Director James Ivory is embroiled in a legal battle over a $350,000 (£240,000) contract linked to The City of Your Final Destination, his first feature without the support of his original partner.

What's the downside to digital special effects and 3D movies overtaking theaters? One, at least, is that fans may lose sight of actors like Anthony Hopkins.
At 72 years old, the Oscar winner says offers of work have slowed in recent years, and he finds roles in movies such as his current "The City of Your Final Destination," to be most enjoyable because films like it "are very quiet and internal."
That is not to say that Sir Anthony doesn't care to work with big action and special effects. He performed in recent horror tale "The Wolfman" and in the computer-animated "Beowulf."
But with big-budget movies like "Avatar" or "Clash of the Titans" dominating major studio releases -- movies in which the acting is done in front of greenscreens, and sets and stunts are digitally added into the films -- character-driven dramas such as "City of Your Final Destination" get less...

Early in The City Of Your Final Destination, Omar Metwally’s prim, domineering girlfriend (Alexandra Maria Lara) chides him for having stained his pants by stepping into quicksand: “It’s like you have this subconscious drive to fall in, to mess up.” In any other movie, that line would be a thematic key to his character, and a portent of things to come. In this case, though, it’s a teasing hint at a more structured story where the protagonist’s personality might have some effect. This moment initially seems too obvious and on-the-nose, but as it turns out, nothing ...
