★★★☆☆Respect is a funny old thing. In order to get a little, you also have to give a little. What Sacha Bennett's sixth full feature, We Still Kill the Old Way (2014), stylishly and cheekily showcases the ramifications of children not seeing their way to respecting their elders. It knows when to have fun and sits easily between gritty gore and being irreverent to a fault, meanwhile the ganglands of East London have never looked more enticing. When aging gangster Charlie Archer (Steven Berkoff) is murdered by a group of hubristic criminal upstarts, led by upstart Aaron (Danny-Boy Hatchard), it is up to his brother Richie (Ian Ogilvy) to exact vengeance.

Actor and producer who played Brad Majors in the original Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and Saffy's gay dad in Ab Fab
Christopher Malcolm, who has died of cancer aged 67, played Brad Majors in the original production of The Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and, as his life as an actor started to overlap with an interest in producing the shows themselves, he became, after co-producing the West End revival of Rocky Horror in 1990, the executive in charge of all subsequent worldwide productions.
His death came just a few days after his latest project, the revival of Oh What a Lovely War at Stratford East, opened to enthusiastic notices, probably sealing a West End transfer. The way the show turned out was a good example of the kind of creative partnerships he enjoyed and nurtured throughout his career. For more than 30 years, he worked as an "insider" producing link between such London...

"Double-0 Seven on an island populated exclusively by women? We won't see him till dawn!"
Thirty years ago, moviegoers were treated to not one, but two new James Bond movies in theaters: the non-canon Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery, and tonight's feature, Octopussy, starring Roger Moore. Moore managed to best Connery at the box office battle of the Bonds that year, but the debate over which actor was the better Bond will never end for those who grew up watching their movies in the '60s, '70s and '80s.
Octopussy borrows its name and title character from a short story by James Bond creator Ian Fleming, but the plot is original. When MI6 agent 009 (Andy Bradford) is found dead at the British embassy in East Berlin dressed as a circus clown, 007 (Moore) is dispatched to investigate. The trail leads Bond to Octopussy (Maud Adams), a wealthy...

From an album of candid shots by Dennis Hopper to a study of the short-lived Zambian 60s space programme, here are 10 more of the year's top picture publications
A few weeks ago, I rounded up some of the best photobooks of 2012, but the ones I left out have been nagging at me ever since. There follows, in no particular order, a much more personal selection, most of which are still available.
Billy Monk: Nightclub Photographs, Dewi Lewis, £30
Alongside Lucas Foglia's A Natural Order, which I wrote about here, Billy Monk's Nightclub Photographs is perhaps my favourite photobook of 2012. From 1967 to 1969, Monk was a bouncer in the Catacombs, a sleazy nightclub in Cape Town. He was also an excellent amateur photographer, as this extraordinary book of intimate monochrome reportage shows.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions had lost the right to use Bond’s nemesis Blofeld and his organisation Spectre in any of their films. McClory had been trying since 1974 to get his own rival Bond film made but due to a lack of financial backing and legal action from United Artists and the Fleming Trustees his project...

We have six months to go and a lot of movies left to watch, and as was evidenced by the six films I included in my "Top Ten of the Year Contenders" on yesterday's The Best and Worst Movies of 2011... So Far post, there haven't been a ton of excellent films in theaters just yet. Three of those six films I saw at the Cannes Film Festival and only one of them has hit theaters so far (Midnight in Paris). This means we have to wash away the taste of the last six months. Sure, there were some good films and films we will all likely revisit over the years, but I think we can all generally agree 2011 hasn't exactly been a stellar year for movies.
So what's coming up? Well, I was able to compile a list of the top 21 (plus three) films I'm personally looking forward to seeing.

Carl Barât and Anthony Rossomando on documentaries, disappearing London, and brushes with the law at SXSW
Watch a clip from The Rime of the Modern Mariner
Last time half the team behind the The Rime of the Modern Mariner were at South by Southwest, they got arrested. After a Dirty Pretty Things gig in a too-small bar went unwieldy, Austin's boys in blue hauled Carl Barât and Anthony Rossomando off-stage and down to the station.
Five years on, and their festival involvement is rather more mellow: Barât narrates and Rossomando scores a salty, evocative documentary about the slow death of docking (maritime, rather than computing). Yet something of that rock'n'roll spirit has survived in Mark Donne's movie: a stylish essay that combines chinwags with East End sea dogs with a gonzo two-week adventure on the high seas with the crew of a Maersk cargo boat.
The idea was hatched in the pub,...

The Factory
Opens: 2011
Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger
Director: Morgan O'Neill
Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...

When talking about British Film there are certain, unavoidable, assumptions one automatically makes. Those crisply enunciated words have long conjured pictures of rolling hills, heaving bosoms, mad Kings and foppish fools. An entire industry has been built upon the ever changing hair of Mr Hugh Grant and Jane Austen’s back catalogue has been taken advantage of in the parlour time and time again.

Just in time for its debut at the Film4 FrightFest we've gotten our hands on a couple of more stills and even the DVD cover art for Dead Cert!
After premiering at London Film4 FrightFest (August 26-30), Dead Cert will be released on DVD in UK by Momentum Pictures on September 27th. Special Features include an audio commentary, and a making-of featurette.
Producer Jonathan Sothcott says of star Billy Murray (pictured below), "“Billy Murray has the same qualities as an actor that DeNiro and Nicholson do – he can be utterly charming and utterly terrifying – and he can turn either on at will. He’s an actor whose brilliant TV work kept him away from film audiences in the last decade but his performances in recent movies like Rise of the Footsoldier, Freight and now Dead Cert are utterly compelling – an incredibly accomplished, stylish film actor at the top of his game.

Writer/producer Jonathan Sothcott just dropped us a line with the good news that later this week we'll be getting a look at the UK DVD artwork for director Steven Lawson's Dead Cert, and in the meantime he's given us a few new exclusive stills and an update on what we can expect to see once it's released.
Starring Craig Fairbrass and Billy Murray, Dead Cert follows a gang of tough London gangsters who get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met.
Sothcott describes the film as "a fun vampire romp through London’s East End in the tradition of The Lost Boys, Dracula Ad 1972, and Vamp. It's an old fashioned vampire...

Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson and Stephen Dillane in a cockney hard man dialogue driven love story set almost entirely in one room. Could you want any more from a movie? Some people definitely will and probably won’t like this film, but I adored what 44 Inch Chest offered and feel it’s going to be misunderstood when it’s being compared to Sexy Beast so much. The only similarity is Ray Winstone, Ian McShane and some swearing…..A lot of swearing.
The intriguingly titled 44 Inch Chest smashed me in the face from all sides as the stunning cast took me on a dodgem car ride of emotions from start to finish that left me in complete awe of what I saw. From the writers of Sexy Beast, Louis Mellis & David Scinto, and debut director Malcolm Menville, I was thinking 44″ was going to be a London gangster...

Brixton-born City trader Robert Fucilla had succeeded in everything he had put his hand to, from selling oil to backing British hip-hop acts, and believed his Italian ancestry gave him a shot at being a British Al Pacino. Of course, millions dream of breaking into the movies, but what underpinned Fucilla's ambition, friends and workmates agree, what made him stand out from every other fantasist and wannabe, was self-belief and a monumental ego.
Too impatient to train as an actor, and having briefly tried the traditional route of castings and pumping connections, Fucilla decided to buy his way in. You could have heard a body drop when news reached the Filmshaft office that Dagenham was hosting a cauldron of gangster violence, sexual deviance and the supernatural. “What’s the story there? Why don’t we go the whole hog and report on the f—king local buses?” was just one response but when Filmshaft informed Ed Whitfield that there were vampires and free sandwiches involved, his mood changed. “I suppose I could go and take a look…”
It’s a freezing cold November morning in Dagenham, East London and I’m lost in a labyrinthine maze of industrial hangers and silver gilded fences. “Where the f—k am I?” is my question to a stray dog and I reach for the I-phone map app. This technological marvel, coded by a bastard evidently, tells me that my destination is the other side of an imposing 12 foot wall of perforated corrugated sheeting.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott sent along an exclusive batch of first photos (see ’em below) from his vampire movie Dead Cert, currently lensing in the UK under the direction of Steven Lawson. “We have been filming on location in East London and Essex since Saturday—tough night shoots, but the shots Steve is getting are amazing,” Sothcott tells us.
Dead Cert, which we last covered here, stars “Craig Fairbrass and Lisa McAllister as Freddie Frankham and Jen Christian, a couple whose world is torn apart by vampires,” Sothcott continues. “Craig and Lisa have an amazing chemistry; they work brilliantly on screen as a couple and are giving powerhouse performances.”
Also starring is veteran actor Steven Berkoff as vampire hunter Kenneth Mason. “Steven is an absolute legend, and I’m thrilled he’s doing the film,” the producer says. “I called him and asked him, and he said yes immediately. We were all amazed and so excited.
