The plot couldn't be simpler: Leo and Nina lived happily out of wedlock until one day Nina asked Leo to marry him. Leo, hostile to conformity, had always been opposed to the idea and it looked as though Nina as well. But giving in to his companion's insistence, the young man agrees to an unconventional wedding, without the expensive white gown, without the traditional candy box, with gifts to charities instead of wedding presents, the lot. Nina agrees … or seems to.

'Il giorno + bello' is one of these comedies that make you both laugh and think over. The film is filled with witty lines and gags abound (the tribulations of poor overwhelmed Leo, the running gag of the Murano glass vase, etc.) but there is more to it than just that. It is also a biting fable about how to be nonconformist and HOW TO REMAIN nonconformist, how conformity permanently threatens you and how those you love can be your worst enemies in your fight to be yourself. In this case the attractive Nina makes use of all her (many) charms to make her companion fall into the trap. This dark aspect, reinforced by a very unsettling ending, make 'Il giorno + bello' a very thought-provoking experience. If you are about to form a couple with someone, look at this movie in the company of your partner. It may help you have sound relationships with her or him later on.

The film is interpreted to perfection by a real-life couple, Fabio Troiano and Violante Placido. Note that Violante has not asked Fabio … to marry him. Yet!
