If you’re in the mood for something really scary — and maybe a little off beat — to watch this Halloween, you’re in luck! A terrific crop of wickedly frightening and ghoulishly grotesque horror flicks that terrorized the underground film circuit have made their way to your favorite VOD streaming service just in time for this All Hallow’s Eve.
Saturday Morning Mystery, dir. Spencer Parsons (Amazon | Itunes) Saturday Morning Mystery is one of the best, most original horror movies in recent memory. The film cashes in on both the modern obsession with paranormal investigating as well as on that classic Saturday morning cartoon, Scooby-Doo. But, this ain’t no kiddie film! Four hipsters and their (non-talking) dog look to solve a good ghost mystery and immediately find themselves way in over their heads. Gory and outrageous in more ways than one, what’s most impressive about this flick is how smart,...

Ho Ho Yikes! This year Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film is breaking up its annual Underground Holiday Shopping Guide into a couple of different posts by genre. That way it’s easier to really match up your loved one’s entertainment tastes with the best that the underground has to offer!
First up: If there’s a special someone you know who’s bored with traditional blood and scares, here are some outrageous fright flicks that will make them scream with delight when they see them under the tree.
New on DVD:Strange Girls
One of Bad Lit’s favorite horror flicks of the past five years finally made it to DVD in 2011. In her debut feature, filmmaker Rona Mark created two of the most original on-screen murderers in Virginia and Georgia Gruczechy — twin, socially-reclusive, psychotic girls with their own invented language who kill anyone who they think is deserving.

Actress Michelle Tomlinson is best known as the star of The Cellar Door and Kevin S. Tenney's recent zombies-from-space romp, Brain Dead. She is also a devoted Halloween fan, although she's been too busy lately to enjoy it as she once did. But in years past, Michelle was the Queen of Halloween.
"I have dressed up as so many kooky things, and used to love going to Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood with the throngs of humans and getting wild and crazy," Michelle told me recently. "I think it's an awesome excuse to get dressed up and be outside of yourself and be silly!"
For the record, I can personally attest to Michelle's love affair with all things October 31. I've known her for a while now and I can recount many Halloweens where I received unintelligible midnight texts containing bizarre photos of Michelle, clad in various outrageous costumes...

October 4, 2011 is the street date for the horror-comedy George: A Zombie Intervention, from Breaking Glass Pictures and their Vicious Circle Films arm of releasing. You may recognize hottie actress Michelle Tomlinson from Kevin Tenney’s Brain Dead (review here) in a prominent role here.
George’s friends have all gathered for an intervention… George’s intervention. You see, George is a zombie and George’s friends are attempting to convince George to stop eating people and to enter ‘zombie rehab’. But the intervention doesn’t go quite as planned.

I am not sure what took so long, but director Kevin Tenney, someone who didn’t grow up on horror films, thought about doing a movie where a Ouija board was the star. That brings me to the 1993 sequel, Witchboard 2: The Devil’s Doorway, a movie I think is just as good, if not better, than Witchboard.
Jason Bene: How long after the financial success of Witchboard did you decide to write and direct the sequel?
Kevin Tenney: The production company, Paragon Arts International, and I talked about it right away. Their investors were all very anxious to fund a Witchboard sequel. But Paragon Arts wanted to leverage that interest by having them invest in another film first, entitled Night Angel. Paragon was going to quickly produce that film and then go straight into Witchboard 2. Unfortunately, they had a lot of problems with production and budget on Night Angel,...

From the first peek at the trailer it was clear this was going to be trashy cinema, but would it be the kind that would entertain and enthral? In a word, no. The billing of this as a comedy/horror is strange because it is neither funny nor scary. In fact, it’s dire.
The story is a predictable enough one: a ragtag band of strangers end up shacked up together in a cabin in the woods when there are zombies on the loose wanting to feast on their brains. End of pitch, end of plot.
Movies like this can be entertaining - ramp up the fear, have the characters getting on one another's nerves, then watch it go. But you need a good cast for that - and a good script. Brain Dead has neither, and should go down in the annals of filmmaking as one of the worst movies ever made.

Night of the Demons, Witchboard, these are films that horror fans have grown up watching over and over again. So when Kevin Tenney, the director behind Witchboard and Night of the Demons, has a new film coming out, we here at Bdhr take notice. Kevin Tenney's latest effort, Brain Dead starring Joshua Benton, Sarah Grant Brendecke, David Crane and Andy Forrest, is a homage to the horror films of yesteryear. We also wanted to know what Kevin Tenney thought of the Night of the Demons remake starring Shannon Elizabeth (Scary Movie), Edward Furlong (Brainscan) and Monica Keena (Freddy vs. Jason) and in a cameo appearance Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead). Here's what he had to say about everything.
Who is Kevin Tenney and what are you all about?
I’m a father, a husband, and a filmmaker in that order. I was born in Hawaii to a military family.

Kevin Tenney, best known for the popular 1980s fright flicks Night Of The Demons and Witchboard, returns to the genre with Brain Dead, a zombie comedy opus that splatters onto DVD this Tuesday, October 26 from Vicious Circle/Breaking Glass. Fangoria spoke with the busy Tenney, whose Night Of The Demons (now on DVD and Blu-ray from Entertainment One) got the remake treatment this year with Tenney himself onboard as producer.

It’s July 2006 and southern California is frying. For three weeks now, veteran director Kevin Tenney has been sweating pounds off the cast and crew of his new film “Brain Dead” in the mountains of Tujunga. This will be his first truly independent film, financed and produced entirely by his own company. With a tight budget and a short schedule, he and his cast are not discussing artistic integrity in an air conditioned studio. They’re fighting brain-eating zombies 12 hours a day in 114 degree heat. So why are all these people smiling?...

If it’s Halloween, that means it’s time for people to start clamoring to watch the latest remakes and sequels to classic scary movies. Hey, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I enjoy a well-done remake or sequel. That there’s not too many of them, that’s a different story. But, it might be time to try something a little bit off the beaten path:
Brain Dead, dir. Kevin S. Tenney. The rock however is not the problem; the trouble stems from the brain-sucking slime that hitched a ride in the rock. Early in the festival promos were run for the first zombie feature playing on Sunday. In the Kevin Tenney’s Brain Dead trailer it seemed that they were giving away decent kill shots. A lot of them. Then you get that sickly feeling that you’ve seen just about all that the movie has to offer. Or, the trailer was just cleverer than we were giving credit for and the production team couldn’t possibly give away everything! Could they? Well, the audience was hooked and with the promise of filling a theatre with a zombie horde the marketing was in full swing and you could get away with showing pretty much anything. Yep, you could scrape the bottom of the zombie barrel and feast on our brains.

They lurched, they staggered, and they tottered along a three-mile route in downtown Toronto today as the city’s third annual Zombie Walk drew over 1,000 bloodied and rotting participants.
The Zw began around noon, with re-animates from across the city meeting at a downtown park to beg for brains, listen to parade instructions, meet fellow undead and beg for brains. Did I already say that?
After a lot of lurching, laugher, and posing for the army of photogs, the assembled reliving lurched their way along two major city streets to their final destination, the Tad filmfest and its Sunday evening Canadian Premiere showing of Kevin Tenney’s Brain Dead.
Early reports suggest not one brain was eaten. Repeat: early. Check after the break for stills!

Adam Lopez is the man.
Once, a long time ago, this infectiously enthusiastic Toronto based cinema buff came up to me and unspooled a spiel about his grand plan to start a homegrown horror and cult film festival. I nodded, amused by his fervor, but I admittedly didn't take him terribly seriously. But Adam did it. And the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, now in its 3rd spectacular year at my home city's legendary Bloor Cinema, is a terror-ific testament to his grandiose sick celluloid visions.
This go around is Tadff's biggest ever, spanning 8 days and spitting out 16 brand spanking new horror, sci-fi, action and exploitation movies that are guaranteed to shock your stinking socks clean off.
Highlights of the better than impressive list include:
Let The Right One In
Friday, October 17th, 7pm
A much hyped Swedish vampire bloodbath / coming of age melodrama that is as touching as it is brutal.

I haven't even finished all of my Fantastic Fest work yet (expect a semi-large wrap-up real soon), but my inbox has been flooded with new reports from three other genre festivals. And since I love this stuff, I figured I'd throw 'em all into one handy section. Let's begin reverse-chronologically, shall we?
Beginning on October 17 is the small-but-powerful Toronto After Dark festival (October 17 - 24), which aims to fill a post-tiff void while Midnight Madness programmer Colin Geddes and his staff take a well-earned vacation. So, Fantastic Fest is now behind us which means the next big event for genre fans is the Toronto After Dark fest, unspooling in late October, and the final block of titles has just been announced. What do you get? Well, joining the already strong lineup are Thai horror omnibus 4bia, freshly minted Fantastic Fest prize winner South of Heaven, period grave robbing horror comedy I Sell The Dead with Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, a bit more Perlman in The Mutant Chronicles, Darrell Hammond and Jason Mewes in Netherbeast Incorporated, and the local premieres of Donkey Punch, Home Movie and Kevin Tenney’s Brain Dead. Tasty goodness.
