The Bucheon film festival’s Network of Asian Fantastic Films project market wrapped up three days of meetings and pitching sessions on Monday with a prize ceremony that disbursed cash, post-production support and invitations to related genre film events.
“The Passport,” a Tamil- and English-language Malaysian project about an Indian rockstar who is forced to confront cultural expectations and her interactions with an imaginary friend, won the headline Bucheon Award for director Ananth Subramanian and producer Bel Choo Mun. It was both a popular choice among other Naff participants and the unanimous decision of the jury.
The numerical winner was “Please Bear With Me,” which saw director Gabriela Serrano and producer Gale Osorio from the Philippines collect three prizes. The project is a sci-fi and social issues mash-up about a call center operative who gets paid in dream-time and uses it to relive her glory days as a pop star.

William Malone, a Master of Horror behind such films as Creature, House on Haunted Hill, and Parasomnia, once took a stab at mixing early internet tech with horror in FeardotCom, which starred Stephen Dorff and was released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2002.
The film has been making a bit of a resurgence and maybe even having a renaissance with horror fans newly appreciating the much-maligned techy horror film that followed Dorff as a New York City detective who investigates mysterious deaths occurring 48 hours after users log onto feardotcom.
Now, you can judge for yourself as FeardotCom is streaming exclusively on Screambox today, alongside Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, the 1990 sequel starring Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings) and Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead)!

William Malone, he of House on Haunted Hill 1999, Parasomnia, Masters of Horror and Creature is an idiosyncratic voice in horror. Quality, at times, notwithstanding, his film are loopy and eccentric, and he’s pushing to keep the vibe alive in Thallium’s Box. Currently underway on a Kickstarter campaign, Thallium’s Box is described a “mesmerizing terror…

Halloween is just a couple months away now, which means we're pretty damn close to the time when those Halloween superstores will once again be popping up in a town near you. That also means you'd better start thinking about who/what you're going to be this year, whether you're going out trick or treating (you're never too old) or kicking back at a friend's house and pounding pumpkin beer. Thankfully, Trick or Treat Studios is here to help! Created by Chris Zephro in 2009, Trick or Treat Studios rose to prominence last year with the release of their officially licensed Michael Myers mask, at long last a quality Myers mask that was made available for a fraction of the cost similar masks had for years been selling for from indepedent mask makers. Zephro and sculptor Justin Mabry's attention to detail paid off, and the Myers mask instantly became not only a fan favorite,...

When it comes to Ole Bornedal's upcoming supernatural chiller Possession, I've really been on the fence. A few cool images have surfaced, but quite a few boring pics have accompanied them. What you're about to see below however certainly isn't dull, and piques my curiosity far more than anything I've seen thus far. The screenplay was written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Resident, Texas Killing Fields), Kyra Sedgwick (Man on a Ledge, Gamer), Madison Davenport (Parasomnia, Shameless) and Agam Darshi (Watchmen, 2012) star.

I'm really looking forward to seeing The Possession in theaters on August 31, 2012. The film is about a young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Kyra Sedgwick (Born on the Fourth of July), Grant Show (The Girl Next Door), Natasha Calis (Gone) and Madison Davenport (Parasomnia) star. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White provide the script with which Ole Bornedal will direct.

For this writer one of the highlights of this past July's San Diego Comic-Con was the chance to sit in on the "Dark Shadows" panel, which included actress turned author Kathryn Leigh Scott, whose first fiction novel, Dark Passages, was recently released by Pomegranate Press. To coincide with the release, Dread Central interviewed Ms. Scott about not only her new book but also the time she spent working both on the "Dark Shadows" TV series and in the Playboy Club during its heyday. We also managed to garner a tiny bit more info on what's in store for fans of "Dark Shadows" in the upcoming Tim Burton film adaptation.

Veteran horror writer John Skipp has a new vision. Skipp is in pre-production for Rose: The Bizarro Zombie Musical, an incredibly unique musical feature starring a gorgeous, machete juggling ex-mental patient hosting an internet/cable-access puppet show in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
Have you ever seen anything like that before? Me neither. Sounds intriguing though, doesn't it?

Rose -- think "Pee Wee’s Playhouse" meets Night of the Living Dead -- is the totally Bizarro story of Rose (Chase McKenna), a hot machete-juggling ex-mental patient with an internet/cable access puppet show, who becomes an unlikely hero of the zombie apocalypse.

First things first … here's a quick overview of "The Key to Annabel Lee [A Woman in Triptych]":
Death, and things in threes, are major themes in "The Key to Annabel Lee [A Woman in Triptych]". Narrating and starring in the films (four shorts in all — best described as a cinematic form of installation art) is Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera), famous as the lead singer of the industrial rock band Skinny Puppy. Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast) appears as a wolf-like seducer in two installments of the experimental film, but "the star of the show, as in the poem, is Annabel Lee herself," says Staci. We've been talking about Staci Layne Wilson's upcoming short "The Key to Annabel Lee [A Woman in Triptych]" for a while now, and this week marks both the end of principal photography and the opening of the film's official website - on Edgar Allan Poe's birthday no less!
"Interestingly enough," says Wilson, "wrap date was locked in on Poe's birthday [January 19th]. We had some rather remarkable coincidences every date we shot — we commenced on December 8, 2010, which marked the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination (whose song 'Imagine' fits our theme as well) and finished the bulk of our filming on December 15, the day one of my favorite directors and a great inspiration, Jean Rollin, passed away." The director adds, "I also think it's interesting to note that 'Annabel Lee' is the last complete poem composed by Poe, and it's the very first thing I directed."

Bloody Disgusting got word that Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport (Parasomnia) and Natasha Calis (Held Hostage) have been cast alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Losers, Watchmen, Jonah Hex, The Resident) in Lionsgate's horror thriller Dibbuk Box, with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert producing via their Ghost House Pictures shingle. Danish director Ole Bornedal (Just Another Love Story, The Substitute) is directing from a script -- inspired by true events -- by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Boogeyman, Knowing, Poltergeist). In theaters October 28, Morgan will star as a recently divorced father whose youngest daughter becomes strangely connected to an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. As his daughter's behavior becomes more erratic, the father senses a dark presence building until he discovers that the box was built to contain a dibbuk -- a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

Best-selling horror author John Skipp (pictured) is taking a grassroots approach to funding his planned 3-D zombie puppet musical Rose.
“Big-buck investors come and go, but the audience for cool zombie entertainment is incredibly loyal, and staggeringly huge,” says Skipp, whose movie—think Pee-Wee’s Playhouse meets Night of The Living Dead—is the story of Rose (Chase McKenna), a hot machete-juggling ex-mental patient with a cable-access puppet show who becomes an unlikely hero of the undead apocalypse. “Mixing hardcore horror and wacky bizarro is what makes it fun,” Skipp adds. “Its abnormality is its strength.”
On Monday, Skipp launched a 45-day campaign on Kickstarter—a website devoted to audience-funded creative projects of all shapes and sizes—with the goal of raising $250,000 for the live-action feature. He is appealing, in particular, to the thousands of Zombie Walk groups around the world, offering incentives that include using actual Zombie Walk footage in the film.

Staci Layne Wilson's upcoming short film "The Key to Annabel Lee" has, in Staci's words, evolved into a form of "installation art", and to give us a better idea of what to expect, she's provided Dread Central with two new exclusive stills and a quick clip.
The film stars Cherilyn Wilson (Parasomnia), Corrie Shenigo (After You), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast I, II, III), and Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera) as "The Narrator". It involves an evil seductive wolf character (played by Goldner) and three incarnations of the tragic character of Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee, played by three different actresses (Wilson, Shenigo, and Staci herself). Shot in Southern California on the shores of southern Los Angeles beaches, "The Key to Annabel Lee" uses gorgeous sweeping shots of ocean vistas as a backdrop for much of the action.

It just dawned on me today that I completely forgot about Parasomnia when I was doing my favorite films of the year. It really is tough to keep up on the many pictures I watch, and William Malone’s sleeper spectacle is one that I saw some time back. It is a blessing in disguise that I was absent-minded because it allows me to put his sleeping beauty fable in the spotlight. The irony is Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland made some many critics worst list, whereas Parasomnia is Alice in Acidland and will make you forget than expensive blunder. Here is the interview I did with William Malone prior to the Blu-ray/DVD release of the flick.
Jason Bene: You are a huge devotee of the 1920 silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. How much of that style and vision can be seen in Parasomnia?

We knew from the wonders of Facebook and Twitter that Staci Layne Wilson is making the leap from journalism to filmmaking via her upcoming short film "The Key to Annabel Lee", and now that principal photography has wrapped, she's revealed some plot details and provided us with a few production stills.
The film stars Cherilyn Wilson (Parasomnia), Corrie Shenigo (After You), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast I, II, III), and Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera) as "The Narrator"; and FanGirltastic got the early word on the storyline for Staci's dark and sensual fantasy: [It] involves an evil seductive wolf character (played by Goldner) and three incarnations of the tragic character of [Edgar Allan Poe's] Annabel Lee, played by three different actresses (Wilson, Shenigo, and Staci herself). Shot in Southern California on the shores of southern Los Angeles beaches, "The Key to Annabel Lee" uses gorgeous sweeping shots of ocean vistas as a backdrop for much of the action.

A new short film based on the poem "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe.
Principal photography has wrapped on The Key to Annabel Lee, the directorial debut of film journalist Staci Layne Wilson (who also wrote the script), who has been a key member of the genre journalist faction for years at outlets like Cinefantastique, Syfy.com, and Horror.com.
Like several other new major journalists-turned-filmmakers (Jovanka Vucovick, Stacie Ponder, and Andrew Kasch) Wilson has decided to pick up the reigns and make the kind of film she'd like to see; one with amazing colors, costumes, makeup, emotion, and fantastical tragedy with a touch of the sensual.
The film stars Cherilyn Wilson (Parasomnia), Corrie Shenigo (After You), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast I, II, III), and Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera) as "The Narrator", sporting a rather awesomely idealized Poe-esque demeanor and costume.

Part of what makes the horror genre so much fun is all the creatures lurking in the shadows. One man who knows that in particular is special effects creator Jeff Farley, whose work has recently been featured in "Camera Obscura", a new web series by Drew Daywalt that is currently being featured on Daily Motion as well as right here on Dread Central.
Farley, who grew up in Southern California, has made a name for himself over the last 25 years in the industry, working on such classics like The Serpent & The Rainbow, Shocker and Freddy’s Dead as well as modern cult faves like Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys, Evil Bong, and Parasomnia. We recently had a chance to catch up with Farley to chat about how he got his start working in special effects and his collaboration with Daywalt on "Camera Obscura".

Parasomnia is a broad term that refers to sleep related disorders which includes sleepwalking, night terrors, and even grinding your teeth. The movie is about a woman, Laura (Cherilyn Wilson), who suffers from a rare sleep disorder the doctors call the ‘Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.’ She has literarily slept away most of her life and only wakes for brief periods of time. Since she has not experienced much living, her purity and innocence have attracted two suitors from different ends of the spectrum. There is Danny (Dylan Purcell),an art student, who genuinely cares about her well...

Black Narcissus was originally released in 1947 and caused a sensation with its explosive story about a nun (Deborah Kerr), cloistered in a remote convent in the Himalayas, who must battle elements both external (the punishing weather) and internal (temptations of the flesh over duty to the spirit). Also features stellar turns by England’s greatest actresses at the time: Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron and a young Jean Simmons. One of the most dazzling films ever made, bolstered by Oscar-winning cinematography from Jack Cardiff. The Rig BannerHow appropriate is this? An oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is threatened to go down and take the oil workers in to the depths. Bp will not be getting all the publicity for oil spills as the relatively new director Peter Atencio brings The Rig to DVD in 2010, with help from Anchor Bay Studios. William Forsythe (Dear Mr. Gacy), Art Lafleur ("The Mentalist"), Marcus Paulk (Take the Lead), Serah D'Laine (Parasomnia) and Stacey Hinnen (Sharpshooter) will be those trying to stay alive as a mysterious creature goes about his/her/its business of murder. Watch out Bp there is someone even worse on the prowl.

You’ve gotta give it up to director William Malone – the helmer of 1999's gory House on Haunted Hill remake and the universally reviled 2002's FeardotCom has conjured up something of an original idea for his new film Parasomnia. Parasomnia is the story of Laura Baxter (Cherilyn Wilson), who suffers from a rare form of parasomnia that leaves her asleep for the majority of her life. She is physically capable and generally healthy but tragically rendered comatose for days and months at a time.
Kept in a hospital bed and fed intravenously on a regular basis, Laura seems doomed to this existence until Danny Sloan (Dylan Purcell) stumbles across her room while visiting a friend in rehab. Danny is taken with Laura almost immediately and strives to find out more about her. Coincidentally, in the room next to Laura, serial killer and master hypnotist Byron Volpe (Patrick Kilpatrick - best name ever?...

Is it fair to judge a film’s merits based on its creation? When watching Apocalypse Now, it’s hard not to consider the hell that Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Sheen went through while making it. Going into Parasomnia (Dreams Of The Sleepwalker), out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from E1, I knew that director William Malone—one of the original Masters Of Horror—had self-financed this project. What was to be seen would be undoubtedly a labor of love. Some journalists have no trouble coping with that kind of information. Some.

Dread Central recently caught up with writer/director John Skipp during the Never Sleep Again event this past weekend and talked to him about his brand new project he has coming up, Rose. The creator describes the project as "a freaky shot-in-3D feature with a radically whacked-out approach to the undead. Call it Pee Wee’s Playhouse meets Night of the Living Dead".
Skipp went on to say, “Rose is a super-hot, hilarious ex-mental patient with a cable access puppet show in downtown La. But now it’s 48 hours into the zombie apocalypse so she’s running rescue stations and musical numbers round the clock, trying to keep people’s hope alive…and periodically pausing to pulverize the skulls of the zombies trying to bust down her door.”
The movie introduces sexy newcomer Chase McKenna as the machete-juggling, shotgun-toting, corset-sporting gonzo comedienne with a secret that just might save the world.

E1 Entertainment will be releasing Parasomnia on DVD and Blu-Ray July 13th (Dread). Central character Laura Baxter suffers from titular syndrome (sounds dirty), which leaves her in a partial sleep coma for most of the day. A serial killer uses her condition to his advantage by invading her dreams and turning them into nightmares. This site is not totally familiar with the film, but those with an interest in dreams, dream analysis, fantasy, or simply horror can pick themselves up a copy of the film inside.
A synopsis for Parasomnia here:
"Laura Baxter is a young woman, literally a "sleeping beauty," who suffers from a medical condition called parasomnia. A childhood accident victim, she is actually sleeping her life away, awakening briefly on rare occasions. Art student Danny Sloan falls in love with her, unaware that her hospital neighbor, a terrifying mass murderer and mesmerist named Byron Volpe has other,...

Two titles put in the can long ago are making their DVD debut this year. On July 13, E1 Entertainment will release Parasomnia from director William Malone ( House on Haunted Hill ). #1: RZA talks about films in the works
RZA is a genius musician but he’s ready to make the leap into film. In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, he confirmed that work is progressing on “The Man with the Iron Fist”, an old school “martial arts extravaganza” which will also be his directorial debut (with a little help from Eli Roth(?). If that’s not enough, RZA has also signed on to produce “The Last Dragon” remake with Samuel L. Jackson, a project he had already agreed to star in last year. [via: The A.V. Club]
#2: “Ghost in the Shell” goes live-action
Laeta Kalogridis (the writer behind “Night Watch”, “Alexander” and the god awful “Pathfinder” – 2 for 3 aint bad) is in the process of adapting a live-action version of “Ghost in the Shell.” Yes, he’ll try his hand at making high-brow, non-sensical (but awesome) anime into a package that Hollywood will eat-up.
